When it comes to equipment, we can all learn a lot from Spieth

Jordan Spieth never blames his clubs – only himself. It’s why, despite struggling over the past 12 months, he is using pretty much exactly the same gear with which he won The Open, writes James Savage

Since winning the Open at Royal Birkdale last year Jordan Spieth has had a lean spell by his ridiculously high standards.

He’s failed to win for start but has generally looked out of sorts – particularly on the greens which has long been THE great strength of his game.

His putting stats for much of the 2017-18 season have made for grim reading.

But while others around him have switched from putter to putter – including Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson and now Tiger Woods – Spieth has stuck with his trusty Scotty Cameron Circle T 009 putter.

It’s the same putter he has used since his junior days and he’s also stuck with the same SuperStroke Flatso 1.0 grip.

I wouldn’t say that Spieth has ever been considered a great driver of the ball. We’ve all seen some of the areas he ends up playing his second shots from…

But he still uses the Titleist 915 driver which he’s had in the bag now for about four years. There are two newer models he could have used this week.

Spieth had taken a while to switch into the Titleist 718 irons but has always been an AP2 man and generally keeps things simple on that front.

Another thing which typifies Jordan Spieth is his wedge set-up. It’s very particular but it has never changed at any point during is professional career.

He carries four Titleist SM7 wedges – 46˚, 52˚, 56˚, 60˚- and according to Aaron Dill, the Vokey fitter on the PGA Tour, his bounce and grind options have never changed.

So despite struggling for form over the past 12 months, Spieth has always looked at himself first and foremost rather than trying to blame his equipment.

It’s another indicator of how mentally strong he is. He’s got three majors in the bank already so he has every right to have confidence in his ability.

But he hasn’t hit the panic button at any point this season by making drastic equipment changes.

He’s just spent more time on the range and the putting green to figure it out.

That’s something a few other tour players and most amateur golfers could learn from.
