What a US Open Pinehurst No 2 delivered! Five under led after day one and three days later a shot better would have been enough to lift the trophy.

Bryson DeChambeau once again brought the energy and this time managed to get over the line to secure his second major.

For four days he navigated the upturn saucer greens and wiregrass shrubbery better than anyone else.

He also cemented his reputation as the ‘scientist’ by revealing he soaks his golf balls in a solution containing Epsom salts in order to ensure the golf ball is not out of balance.

The balls in question being the Titleist Pro V1x Left Dash – a ball the NCG team got their hands on in 2023 for a full product review.

Titleist featured strongly amongst the top five golfers – being the ball of choice for four out of the five.

But interestingly, none of them play the same Titleist version. In addition to Bryson’s Left Dash, the Pro V1x, Left Dot and the Pro V1 also featured.

Rory McIlroy was the only non-Titleist ball player – teeing up with the TaylorMade TP5x.

Other brands that fleetingly made it into the top five over the week included the Callaway Chrome Tour X and Srixon Z-Star XV.

Top 5 Golf Balls Used At the US Open

1) Bryson DeChambeau – Titleist Pro V1x Left Dash

As the NCG review points out, the Titleist Pro V1x left dash suits a high speed player looking for greater spin control – exactly what Bryson demonstrated, even if it was the salted version!

If you fancy trying this combination for yourself, Epsom salts and the Pro V1x left dash are available from Amazon via the links.

2) Rory McIlroy – TaylorMade TP5x

For the majority of the week Rory had his TaylorMade TP5x under great control. His first round display was some of the best ball striking and course management seen by Rory in recent times.

Unfortunately his putter let him down when it mattered and left the stage for Bryson to produce a sand shot that will live long in the memory.

Amongst the top five golfers he was the only player not playing a Titleist ball – teeing it up with the TaylorMade TP5x. Read the NCG review for more info.

=3) Patrick Cantlay – Titleist Pro V1x

For a time on Sunday it looked like Patrick Cantlay might just sneak in between Bryson and Rory and snatch the US Open trophy. Ultimately he came up two shots short to finish in joint third place with Tony Finau.

Patrick’s ball of choice was also a Titleist Pro V1x but minus the Left Dash – namely, the better known Pro V1x.

=3) Tony Finau – Titleist Pro V1 Left Dot

Tony Finau opts to go for a dot instead of a dash – teeing up the Titleist Pro V1 dot. This version of the Pro V1 is not readily available but according to the Titleist website it is designed for players seeking a more penetrating trajectory with lower long-game spin than Pro V1 but with comparable greenside control and soft feel.

Check out what else is in Tony Finau’s bag.

5) Matthieu Pavon – Titleist Pro V1

Matthieu Pavon’s ball of choice is the classic Titleist Pro V1 – the model best known by most golfers. Read the NCG ball review for more info.

He was not out of the top five all week and ended up playing in the final group on Sunday.

Shooting 71 on Sunday, which was the same score as Bryson DeChambeau, meant he ended up finishing in sole fifth position on three under par.
