Titleist Pro V1 golf ball

I wanted to put the 2023 and 2021 Pro V1’s head-to-head and see the differences.

I think the big difference for me between the two was that the ball flight went more stable. You can see many of my data variables were similar across the two models, but the 2023 Pro V1 was much improved in terms of dispersion. This wasn’t what I expected when I set out to do the testing. I think some of this came down to the ball being more stable in wind as it was a windy day during my initial testing.

I also felt the 2023 ball stayed in the air longer while watching the ball flight during testing. This is reflected in the carry distances, with the new ball being about 2 yards longer. It also flew slightly higher, which will have affected the visual of the flight too.

It also had excellent grip and control on short chips around the green. When chipping and putting I really liked the soft feel.

Overall, this is clearly a great performing all-round golf ball. It performs exceptionally well across all categories. You get a great balance of feel, distance and control. If you are after a tour-level golf ball, it is impossible to go wrong with this.

Pros:

  • Extremely consistent
  • Tighter dispersion
  • Soft feel
  • Great short-game spin control

Cons:

  • Expensive
  • Spins less than Pro V1x

The big draw to this golf ball is the high levels of short-game spin. I love how much you can get this to grip and spin around the greens when chipping, especially from bunkers.

Surprisingly during pitching, my spin was very similar to what I saw with the Pro V1 averaging just 31 rpm more but I think this may have been affected by slightly damp conditions.

This golf ball performed exceptionally well with mid-irons. All my data was super consistent, but I was particularly impressed with the distance control.

Compared to the Pro V1, the ball flight was slightly higher getting to 93.8 feet on average compared to 90.6 feet but interestingly, with identical launch angles.

Overall, as expected, the Pro V1x delivered a very solid performance. It you like the Pro V1 performance but want something that flights slightly higher and spins slightly more around the greens this is a perfect option.

Pros:

  • Launches higher for players who want more height
  • High spinning
  • Exceptional feel

Cons:

  • Expensive

Titleist Pro V1x Left Dash

Best Callaway Drivers 2022

A couple of years ago, Titleist surprised the fans and released the Pro V1x Left Dash model, and I was extremely excited to hit the updated version of it.

The Left Dash model is designed to feel firmer and spin less on full-swing shots than the other 2 balls in the family.

The big headline is that this was the longest ball I tested on our big NCG ball test trip to Woodhall Spa. 267.5 yards average carry is very long for me, and that’s with quite high spin numbers. The ball really seemed to rocket off the face, and the 163mph average ball speed echoes that.

Interestingly I also hit the Left Dash Pro V1x higher than any other ball I tested.

Overall, this is clearly a great performing all-around golf ball. It performs exceptionally well across all categories. Personally, it felt too hard for me around the greens, but Titleist do produce some other great options in the Pro V1 and Pro V1x, so if, despite its really solid testing scores, it still isn’t quite right, you can still get the same performance out of a different Titleist.

Pros:

  • Extremely consistent
  • Tighter dispersion
  • Great short-game spin control

Cons:

  • Reduced feel, especially in the short game

Titleist AVX golf ball

Titleist AVX 2022

Reviewed by Tom Irwin

First of all it looks like a Pro V1, this might sound like a stupid thing to say, but I want my mind free of independent thought when chipping and putting so looking at a ball that my mind has processed 1000s of times before is comforting. There is no new branding to consider, it is not strikingly white like some brands. So I like this familiarity.

To say I was pleasantly surprised is an understatement. I hit lots of chips both with a lofted wedge and some bump and runs. I use bladed irons and Cleveland RTX 4 wedges, I am looking for something really responsive in my short shots. The feel, even at low club head speeds with the AVX, is sublime, and I was able to get it spinning just as I would expect from my Pro V1.

I thought these 7 iron numbers were exceptional. The spin numbers are optimal, and the AVX was one of the longest balls I tested. So that is very much backing up the Titleist claims. The front-to-back dispersion was incredibly good. My full-out shots alls travelling within 5 yards and backing off did indeed take yardage off. This is another big win for the AVX.

Pros:

  • Incredible feel on putts and chips
  • Long and tight dispersion with irons
  • Feels like a premium ball to pitch with

Cons:

  • Struggling for any!

I am a long-time Pro V1 golf ball used, so visually, when I look down on this golf ball, I can see it is a little different. The finish is slightly shinier, and the text is printed slightly differently, but looking down on a Titleist is still very comforting.

Probably the most notable difference between this and a premium golf ball was the drop-off in spin when it came to half shots and shots around the green.

Overall this is a solid performing golf ball which I think I could put in play tee to green. Personally, I would like some extra short-game control, but if you are someone who prefers to hit low-releasing chip shots and you don’t generate much spin this is a perfect all-round option at a great price point.

Pros:

  • Long with driver
  • Great consistency
  • Great value for money

Cons:

  • Didn’t generate as much short-game spin as some other models

Titleist Velocity golf ball

Titleist Velocity golf ball review

I’m nowhere near the longest hitter on the range and, as a player who fluctuates between single figures and mid-handicap, shelling out £50 for a dozen Pro V1s isn’t a clever option given my propensity to find parts of the course better players don’t reach.

It’s all about speed with Titleist’s latest Velocity model. The company promises ‘deep downrange distance’, combined with extremely low spin in the long game and a high flight on all shots. While I don’t think anyone would describe the Velocity as ‘soft’, they’re also saying you can achieve playable greenside feel.

I struck the Titleist Velocity on a calm and warm early spring afternoon at the performance centre at Woodhall Spa. If you could paint a picture of Mr Average with a driver in hand, in terms of distance, then I am it. The R&A’s distance report revealed that, in 2020, a six to 12 handicapper was hitting it 219.8 yards off the tee with a plus or minus of 1.8 yards. This is right where I am. I’ll expect to see an average carry of around 200 to 205 yards and a total run out of up to 220 during my rounds.

Given what we would expect, I was pleasantly surprised with how the Velocity performed in and around the green.

It was hot off the face of the putter, ran nicely for me on contact, and had a consistent end-over-end roll. Like many golfers of my ability level, I have a nasty habit of leaving my putts short and I believe the Velocity would definitely assist me in getting more up to the hole.

Pros:

  • A five yard distance boost with a 7-iron is a very decent return.
  • More responsive around the green than you might expect.
  • Good price point for budget conscious players.

Cons:

  • Harder feel won’t suit all.
  • I’d hoped for a little more distance with driver in hand.

Titleist Tour Speed golf ball

The Titleist Tour Speed golf ball is great for players who are chasing more distance off the tee whilst not losing the feel and keeping some control. This is the ball you play when you are just not quite ready yet to use a tour ball.

The Tour Speed has had a complete make over which features the new 346 Quadrilateral Dipyramid Dimple Design, new core, new casing and cover. I was excited to see how it compared to the Pro V1x ball that I really like.

Our mega ball test at Woodhall Spa started around their fantastic short game area, hitting a variety of different length putts, chips and bunker shots. The ball felt great from the putter face and not too dissimilar to what I expect from a Titleist.

The ball was reactive on chips and bunker shots, too, when struck well, which was a pleasant surprise as normally this is what you lose when moving away from the top-end ball. I also liked the alignment aid on the ball which helped me line my putts up better.

This is an excellent ball and will suit a lot of players. Alongside the Titleist Velocity, Tour Soft & TruFeel, it’s a great ball offering an incredibly soft feel and distances that amateurs will love.

Pros:

  • Extremely consistent
  • Impressive distance from the tee
  • Great ball flight with irons and driver

Cons:

  • Didn’t generate enough spin on 50 yard wedge shot

Titleist TruFeel golf ball

4.5 star review

The Titleist TruFeel has the thinnest truflex cover of any ball that Titleist produce to give the player the best feel around the greens, and I was excited to give it a go.

The TruFeel is designed to provide the softest possible feel above anything else, which is does a great job of. Usually, these types of balls feel very hard and harsh off the face, especially when chipping and putting around the green.

Our mega ball test at Woodhall Spa started around their fantastic short game area, hitting a variety of different length putts, chips and bunker shots. I actually really liked how the ball felt off the putter face, and although I wasn’t able to play chip shots with spin again, the feel was pretty good.

This is a really solid ball and will suit a lot of players. Alongside the Titleist Velocity, Tour Soft & Tour Speed, it’s a great ball offering an extremely soft feel and distances that amateurs will love.

Pros:

  • Extremely consistent
  • Unrivalled value
  • Drivers and irons felt great

Cons:

  • High speed players will not get the best performance out of it
  • Spin drops off around the greens

How do we test golf balls?

At National Club Golfer, we are passionate about producing accurate and thorough reviews and make sure our testing process is rigorous so we get a good understanding of how each club performs.

We headed to Woodhall Spa Golf Club to allow us to collect launch monitor data with our in-house TrackMan and Flightscope. We tested each golf ball on the putting surface and around the greens before collecting data on 50-yard pitch shots, with a 7-iron and with a driver.

What is important when buying a new golf ball?

Feel

Golf ball feel is a personal preference. Different balls on the market will feel softer or firmer depending on their compression and structure. It is crucial to test balls when putting, chipping and hitting long game shots to check you like the performance across all areas.

Distance

How far you want to hit the golf ball is a crucial consideration when picking a brand and model. Getting the right compression relative to your swing speed and strike will help you get the maximum distance out of a golf ball. You also need to consider if getting maximum distance is important to you or if you would rather give up some yardage to gain in other areas.

Spin

Generally, lower handicappers are looking for a ball that spins more so they can get more control around the greens. In this case, getting a ball with a urethane cover is really important as it will give you the most spin and control.

Price

Not everyone wants to spend £50 a dozen on golf balls. When picking the right golf ball for you, you should consider how much you want to spend relative to what performance you want.
