Zach Johnson has had a lengthy career on the PGA Tour, winning 12 times. He has two major championships, winning the Masters and Open Championship.

Johnson has spent a quarter of a century as a professional golfer, having graduated from Drake University in 1998 with a Business Management & Marketing degree. After five years on developmental tours, Johnson made the jump to the PGA Tour after topping the Nationwide Tour’s money list in 2003.

The BellSouth Classic would be Johnson’s first PGA Tour title, which he won in April 2004. He has gone on to win 12 times in total on the Tour. His biggest wins have come in the major championships, of which he has two. Johnson was victorious at the Masters Tournament in 2007, but had to wait eight years for his second major. That came on the Old Course at St Andrews. He defeated Marc Leishman and Louis Oosthuizen in a four-hole aggregate play-off to win the Open Championship in 2015.

After turning 50 in the early part of 2026, Johnson was victorious in his first start on the PGA Tour Champions, winning the James Hardie Pro Football Hall of Fame Invitational. He claimed three wins in the 2026 season, his first campaign on the PGA Tour Champions. The last of those was his first senior major title, with a comfortable victory at the Kaulig Companies Championship.

He has represented Team USA in nine team competitions. Five Ryder Cup appearances and four President Cups appearances to his name. Johnson was victorious in all four Presidents Cup editions he played in, but only won one of his five Ryder Cups, in 2016. He was captain of the American team at the Ryder Cup in 2023, where his side lost out at Marco Simone in Rome.

Mention a European country, and Matt will tell you which resorts make the National Club Golfer Top 100s: European Resorts list. He might even throw in who designed the golf course and how many rooms the hotel has got at each one…

Matt got into the game of golf from a young age, following his old man to the local golf club. He fell for the sport, and now can’t seem to go a day without thinking about how to improve his game (Thanks Dad!). Matt has been a member of Howley Hall GC in Leeds since 2020, and is just about managing to maintain a single-figure handicap. He likes to remind people that he once broke 75, but won’t tell people that it was on a shortened course during the winter.

He moved to Leeds after graduating from the University of Central Lancashire with a First Class Honours degree in Sports Journalism. Matt joined NCG after almost five years travelling the world with the Professional Squash Association, working on events in all four corners of the globe.

Matt currently plays a Cobra King LTDx driver and RadSpeed 3-wood. TaylorMade monopolise the rest of his bag, with a SIM UDI, M5 irons and both Milled Grind and HI-TOE wedges, along with a Monza Redline putter. He uses a Vice Pro Plus golf ball, because he’s a bit different…

Away from golf, Matt is a Manchester United fan, and a keen runner, having ran the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon (his first and possibly last), in May 2023.
