The Masters: Everything you need to know

It’s major season! Take a look at everything you need to know about the 2024 Masters Tournament!

It is one of the biggest and most famous golf events in the world, and Augusta National will once again play host to the Masters.

The tournament kicks off the major season for 2024, with the PGA Championship, US Open and Open Championship all to follow over the coming months.

2024 marks 90 years since the tournaments inception, with Horton Smith winning the very first edition of the Masters back in 1934.

The Masters has seen a trend over the last decade. Six of the last ten winners at Augusta claimed their first major championship in the process.

Jordan Spieth (2015), Danny Willett (2016), Sergio Garcia (2017), Patrick Reed (2018), Hideki Matsuyama (2021) and Scottie Scheffler (2022) all secured a maiden major title with wins at the Masters Tournament.

Jon Rahm, who had won the US Open previously, won at Augusta in 2023, and will aim to defend his title this year.

Other recent winners include the incredible return to glory of Tiger Woods (below) in 2019, with the likes of Bubba Watson and Dustin Johnson also donning the Green Jacket.

Could there be a playoff to decide the winner?

If there are two or more players tied at the top after four rounds, then the Masters will be decided on a playoff.

Again, unlike the other major tournaments, the Masters does things differently. It is the only major championship that features a sudden-death playoff. The 18th and 10th holes are alternated until a winner is found.

Has the Masters ever not finished on a Sunday?

There have been five occasions where the tournament has overran, due to weather delays, with the most recent of those coming back in 1983.

Mention a European country, and Matt will tell you which resorts make the National Club Golfer Top 100s: European Resorts list. He might even throw in who designed the golf course and how many rooms the hotel has got at each one…

Matt got into the game of golf from a young age, following his old man to the local golf club. He fell for the sport, and now can’t seem to go a day without thinking about how to improve his game (Thanks Dad!). Matt has been a member of Howley Hall GC in Leeds since 2020, and is just about managing to maintain a single-figure handicap. He likes to remind people that he once broke 75, but won’t tell people that it was on a shortened course during the winter.

He moved to Leeds after graduating from the University of Central Lancashire with a First Class Honours degree in Sports Journalism. Matt joined NCG after almost five years travelling the world with the Professional Squash Association, working on events in all four corners of the globe.

Matt currently plays a Cobra King LTDx driver and RadSpeed 3-wood. TaylorMade monopolise the rest of his bag, with a SIM UDI, M5 irons and both Milled Grind and HI-TOE wedges, along with a Monza Redline putter. He uses a Vice Pro Plus golf ball, because he’s a bit different…

Away from golf, Matt is a Manchester United fan, and a keen runner, having ran the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon (his first and possibly last), in May 2023.
