The greatest golfer of the 21st Century, Tiger Woods has 15 major titles to his name. He has spent more than 680 weeks at the top of the Official World Golf Rankings, and his 82 PGA Tour wins is a joint-record with Sam Snead.

His gifts were there for all to see, when at the age of just 15, he became the youngest ever US Junior Amateur Champion. He went on to win the US Amateur Championship title three years in a row, with the last of those wins coming at the age of 20. A year later, he would claim the first of his 15 major titles.

Woods won the 1997 Masters Tournament by 12 shots, dominating the field, and that would be a sign of things to come, as he would win at Augusta five times in his career. His last win came in 2019, after battling back from personal issues and injuries, to win a major tournament for the first time in 11 years.

The American also won the PGA Championship four times, along with three Open Championship victories and three US Open wins. He is the only player to hold all four major titles at the same time, having won the US Open, Open Championship and PGA Championship in 2000, before completing the “Tiger Slam” with a win at Augusta in the Masters Tournament in April 2001. His stupendous career also includes two wins at the Players Championship, along with 18 wins in World Golf Championships events, as part of his record-equalling 82 PGA Tour wins.

Woods’ car crash in 2021 saw him hospitalised and underwent emergency surgery to repair compound fractures sustained in his right leg. He is no longer a constant on the PGA Tour, indicating that his full-time career as a pro golfer was over, but he is still expected to make appearances here and there, especially at the majors.

Mention a European country, and Matt will tell you which resorts make the National Club Golfer Top 100s: European Resorts list. He might even throw in who designed the golf course and how many rooms the hotel has got at each one…

Matt got into the game of golf from a young age, following his old man to the local golf club. He fell for the sport, and now can’t seem to go a day without thinking about how to improve his game (Thanks Dad!). Matt has been a member of Howley Hall GC in Leeds since 2020, and is just about managing to maintain a single-figure handicap. He likes to remind people that he once broke 75, but won’t tell people that it was on a shortened course during the winter.

He moved to Leeds after graduating from the University of Central Lancashire with a First Class Honours degree in Sports Journalism. Matt joined NCG after almost five years travelling the world with the Professional Squash Association, working on events in all four corners of the globe.

Matt currently plays a Cobra King LTDx driver and RadSpeed 3-wood. TaylorMade monopolise the rest of his bag, with a SIM UDI, M5 irons and both Milled Grind and HI-TOE wedges, along with a Monza Redline putter. He uses a Vice Pro Plus golf ball, because he’s a bit different…

Away from golf, Matt is a Manchester United fan, and a keen runner, having ran the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon (his first and possibly last), in May 2023.
