We’re at the halfway stage of the Open Championship. Which big names are not sticking around for the weekend?

Tiger Woods Open championship miss cut

As always with the majors, there have been some big names that have missed the cut at the Open Championship this week.

Royal Troon has played firm and fast over the opening two days, with Shane Lowry leading the way. He has played two brilliant rounds in testing conditions to sit at 7-under.

He is one of just a handful of former Open champions who are through to play in rounds three and four on the Ayrshire coastline.

There are plenty of stars who will be going home come Friday evening, including 15-time major champion Tiger Woods. The three-time winner of the Claret Jug struggled on both days, posting rounds of 79 and 77 to finish his tournament at +14.

The drought will continue for Rory McIlroy. The Northern Irishman, who has not won a major for ten years, will see that streak run through to 2025 at the earliest. After an opening round 78, he continued to struggle on Friday, dropping to 13-over before the halfway stage. He fought back with a couple of birdies on the back nine, but missed the cut at +11.

2010 champion Louis Oosthuizen and the last man to win the Open at Troon, Henrik Stenson, both finished the week at +8 and a couple of shots outside the cut line.

Tyrrell Hatton, who now plies his trade in the LIV Golf League, was well inside the cut line at the halfway stage on Friday. However, a back nine of 41 saw him drop to 8-over, missing out by two shots.

Australia’s Min Woo Lee was among those on level par at the start of the second round, but a nightmare Friday saw him card an 80 to drop to +9. US Open champion Bryson DeChambeau was another man to finish three outside the cut line at +9.

Tommy Fleetwood matched DeChambeau with rounds of 76 and 75, while Ludvig Aberg shot his the other way, with all three going home on Friday. Viktor Hovland would go one worse, finishing his Open Championship at +10.

It was even worse for Cameron Smith and Wyndham Clark, two men who have won majors in the last 24 months. Both carded an 80, with Smith adding a 74 today. Clark finished his two days’ work at 18-over, and easily the worst of the big name players at Royal Troon this week.
