Bryson DeChambeau is a golf star known as ‘The Scientist’ for his meticulous approach to the game. He crunches the numbers more than most and plays with clubs that are specifically designed for him, with thicker grips and irons that are all the same length.
In 2015, whilst at Southern Methodist University (SMU), he became just the fifth player in history to win both the NCAA Individual Championship and the US Amateur Championship in the same year, joining Jack Nicklaus, Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods and Ryan Moore in doing so.
His first professional victory was one that earned him his PGA Tour card. Having dropped back to the Web.com Tour finals, he was victorious at the DAP Championship, the season-ending event, to secure his status on the PGA Tour for 2017. He would then go on to win the John Deere Classic that year, his first on the Tour, and a sign of things to come for the American.
DeChambeau has gone on to win nine times on the PGA Tour, including a dominant performance at the 2020 US Open, his first major title. He was the only player to finish under par at Winged Foot, winning with a score of 6-under, despite only hitting 23 fairways all week. Four years later, he secured a second major title, as he lifted the US Open trophy once again.
The American is now a member of the LIV Golf League, having been one in the original group to move to the rival league in 2022. He is the captain of Crushers GC, playing alongside Paul Casey, Charles Howell III and Anirban Lahiri. He won twice on the tour in 2023, with victories at the Greenbrier and in Chicago. The first of those saw DeChambeau shoot a 58 in the final round, the lowest round in the tour’s fledgling history. A year later, the American won the US Open for a second time, taking victory by a single shot at Pinehurst No.2 to win his second major title.
