WGC-Mexico Championship betting tips
WGC-Mexico Championship Fantasy Golf picks
This week’s WGC-Mexico Championship is Fantasy Golf heaven, no cut means all players will play all four rounds should they avoid injury or disqualification for damaging the course.
More rounds means more opportunities to make birdies and all players can still pick up valuable points until they walk up the 18th for the final time on Sunday.
Like Steve, I was interested in Rory McIlroy as the Northern Irishman ticks a lot of boxes for this week and comes into the event with three top fives in as many starts this season. However, I’ve had to avoid McIlroy due to his high price on Draft Kings and instead I have gone down the route of picking a team of ball strikers.
I tipped Xander Schauffele to win last week’s Genesis Open and it was a case of what might have been with the American as he struggled during his opening round before flying up the leaderboard to continue his fantastic form in 2019.
Schauffele’s run over the weekend showed that his game is still there and he has now recorded seven top 25 finishes, making him hard to ignore in Mexico this week.
Hideki Matsuyama is a player that has gone under the radar in the last couple of weeks and has placed inside the top 15 in his last three starts. He has played this course once and finished inside the top 25 but Matsuyama is a player who loves to play in WGC events and the 26 year-old has two titles to his name, is this the week he gets back in the winners’ circle?
A player that I have found hard over the last year is Webb Simpson who is usually in the mix heading into the weekend of a tournament.
The American didn’t have a great debut last year, finishing in a tie for 37th. However, with a string of top 20s to his name I believe Simpson has a good chance of claiming his first WGC title this week.
Despite being unable to pick McIlroy, I have picked opted to go with Sergio Garcia and Ian Poulter just like Steve. Garcia has a fantastic record across both starts on this course and hasn’t finished lower than 12th and if you ignore his experience at the Saudi International the Spaniard is on a good run of form.
Poulter is making his course debut but you can’t help but feel he’ll relish the opportunity to go toe-to-toe with some of the world’s best at Club de Golf Chapultepec. The Englishman also comes into the event on a purple patch with a run of T6-T3-T6 to his name.
Haotong Li is a player that has had some fantastic finishes in the 2019 season already and it’s worth noting they have come in strong fields. Li finished T12 at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic despite carding a final round of 73 and in his last outing he pushed Dustin Johnson all the way at the Saudi International.
The only question marks surrounding Li is his 63rd place last year but I have confidence that he won’t struggle again, especially when he has some form under his belt.
How did Matthew’s Draft Kings picks fare last week?
Xander Schauffele (T15)
Paul Casey (T25)
Cameron Smith (T49)
Charles Howell III (6th)
Rafa Cabrera Bello (T25)
Si Woo Kim (3rd)
Winnings: $20
Fox on fire in fused format and finally top dog on European Tour
