2023 Scandinavian Mixed betting tips

The Best Bet: Joost Luiten @ 30/1

Joost Luiten is back playing some great golf this season, with three third-place finishes, and he comes into this event off the back of back-to-back top 22 finishes in his past two starts.

The Dutchman will no doubt be inspired by the likes of Marcel Siem and Pablo Larrazabal rolling back the years, and at 37, Luiten still has plenty to offer, especially on courses where distance won’t come into play. That will be the case this week at the Scandinavian Mixed, where they are playing at sub-7000 yards and there is little going against him in an event of this magnitude.

Back in 2021, Luiten sat in 2nd place going into the weekend at this event and whilst he couldn’t hold on, I was encouraged to see he made that fast start in this format and this course looks even more suited to his game.

There might not be a better course this season for Luiten, who certainly lacks the distance that some of the best on the Tour possess, but that doesn’t mean he cannot contend when his short irons and wedges come to the fore. The major concern for Luiten has to be the putter, which after years of treating him well, seems to have deserted him. We know that can change on any given week though and I am confident if he gets in the mix, the six-time DP World Tour winner can hold off any challengers down the stretch.

The Each-Way: Matthew Baldwin @ 80/1

In a season where Baldwin has already won an event by seven strokes and has made four of his six cuts since, I am more than happy to take him at 100-1 in a field that lacks any real star power on the men’s side.

Since winning the SDC Championship, the Englishman has missed one cut, but his other finishes read 32nd, 26th, 21st, and 52nd and his 52nd last week could certainly have been far better. Baldwin was 5th going into the weekend in Germany last week, but he shot a Saturday 80 and a Sunday 75 to really fall away, but that was a course full of danger and this one should be far easier. Baldwin is hitting the ball plenty well enough to contend at this event, and I like his performances in the Dormy Open on the Challenge Tour. This event was significant to me, because the original designer of this week’s course Sven Tumber also designed the course used for the Dormy Open. Baldwin finished 12th and 18th in two renewals at that course, and if he can find any similarities in the course setup here, which Jack Nicklaus largely left alone in his redesign, he might look huge value at 80-1.

The Long-Shot: Santiago Tarrio @ 100/1

I am going to give Santiago Tarrio another shot at triple-digits at an event that should certainly play into his strengths. Tarrio is the type that prefers a shorter setup, much like the headline selection, Joost Luiten, and I suspect he will excel at this event just like he did 12 months ago.

Tarrio finished T4 in this event last year and finished just one shot shy of leading the men’s field but was blown away by Linn Grant who beat the field by nine strokes and Tarrio by 10. The Spaniard can make a run at this event again though and at big prices I think he is worth betting on.

Tarrio has made three of his last five cuts and has two top 20s in that time, first a 16th at the Italian Open and then a 20th last week at the Porsche European Open. I wouldn’t put either of those events down as ones playing to his strengths per se, so I would certainly take encouragement from the 20th last week, where he was also 5th after 36 holes.

With two solid finishes amongst his five most recent starts, and memories of a T4 finish in this event 12 months ago, I am going to roll the dice again with Tarrio at 100-1!
