As his rise into the professional game became more and more meteoric, Ludvig Aberg turned to a more experienced pair of hands to become his looper

Swede Ludvig Aberg hired Joe Skovron as his new bagman at the end of 2023.

Experienced caddie Skovron has been in the game since 2009 and had previously been with Rickie Fowler for 13 years, plus a brief stint with Tom Kim.

Skovron replaced Englishman Jack Clarke, who had previously been on the bag for Aberg through his early professional career. But the knowledgeable Skovron alleviates some of the pressures that come with a promising career, and the move paid dividends in the first two years of their partnership.

Joe Skovron is originally from Murietta, California, and he played competitive college golf at the University of La Verne. He still has a low single-figure handicap, but his primary focus is guiding Aberg on the PGA and DP World Tour.

The American spent over a decade working with Fowler, who won The Players in 2015 in a dramatic playoff. One of the duo’s earliest achievements was when Fowler made it onto the 2010 Ryder Cup team at Celtic Manor. Unfortunately, the Americans were defeated by the Euros in Wales, and Fowler ended up with a 0-1-2 record.

Ludvig Aberg: Caddie used to loop for Rickie Fowler on the PGA Tour

With his unwavering experience on the PGA Tour, Skovron has aided Aberg in acclimatising to the professional circuit. Aberg turned pro in June 2023 after attending Texas Tech, and it did not take long to notch his first win. He was victorious at the Omega European Masters in September of 2023, before making his Ryder Cup debut in Rome. Ludvig impressed in the European’s dominance of the USA.

2024 was a quiet year for Aberg, and he eventually had knee surgery at the end of season in order to be ready for the start of this year. Skovron led Aberg to his second PGA Tour win at the Genesis Invitational in February 2025, which was relocated from Riviera Country Club to Torrey Pines after the Palisades fires. Ludvig edged over the line with a one-stroke victory over Mackenzie Hughes in the Signature Event.

Aberg was an unequivocal lock for the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black, and this time, Skovron was on the opposing side after being with the United States on four occasions.

Aberg was the only European to win their singles match on Sunday as he beat Patrick Cantlay 2&1. That feat took his Ryder Cup resume to a respectable 4-4 through his first two appearances, but there is no doubt that the Swede will feature in many more in the coming years.

Aberg’s talent and high ceiling is unquestionable, and his performances at the Masters have been hugely impressive considering the majority of pros take time to learn and decipher Augusta National. But a player of his ability is expected to compete at more majors.

Before the 2025 Valero Texas Open, which preceded the Masters in April, Aberg spoke about the influence that Skovron had on him and his mental game during rounds.

“Joe has kind of helped me to view golf a little bit differently, to take sort of the misses more into account. The comfort that he gives me sort of when everything around you is storming, it’s always nice to lean on Joe.

“He is a very steady, calm person just like I am. I would have a hard time having a caddie that is way up there when I’m not. He definitely helps me with that.”

Skovron seems the man to take Ludvig to the next level, and the former’s superior experience in the field gives Aberg the edge to consistently be in the running in big tournaments.
