Let’s take a look at what news has caught our equipment expert’s eye this week, including the Phantom X 12.5 and the world’s most expensive irons

Phantom X 12.5

Hello everyone. It’s been another busy week at NCG Towers. My colleague Andy and I met up with Matt Masters from SuperSpeed Golf as we embark on an eight-week programme to see if we can increase our swing speed during the winter. Keep an eye on NationalClubGolfer.com for a video and podcast coming soon…

We’ve also been busy filming our reviews for all the shiny new gear that we’ll be allowed to tell you about in January.

For now, here’s some gear news that’s caught my eye this week…

Scotty extend Phantom line-up

Scotty Cameron have added a new model to the 2019 Phantom X family, the Phantom X 12.5.

This is a mallet option for people who want a putter with more toe flow and a new alignment option. The putter is built around the high-MOI Phantom X 12 but has a low-bend shaft. It will also available in a left handed model.

Phantom X 12.5

Visually the most notable change is the new alignment option with the single milled sight line on top this has been inspired by tour requests for bespoke set-up designs.

“Every time we introduce a new putter line, I receive requests from tour players and dedicated golfers for additional setups and configurations. Phantom X 12.5 is the result of some of those requests. I added the low-bend shaft for extra toe flow and also designed a new alignment option by milling a single sight line down the center painted black for a very clean look from address. It really sets up nicely. Adding this new model also gave me the opportunity to make a left-handed version designed so everyone can take advantage of the performance benefits of the Phantom X 12.5.”

Like the other putters in the Phantom family the Phantom X 12.5 it has a multi-material construction incorporating 303 stainless steel and 6061 aircraft-grade aluminium for increase MOI and forgiveness as well as improved sound and feedback. The aluminium components have then been anodised black in a misted finish to help reduce sun glare.

The Phantom X 12.5 putters will be available on February 14, 2020 and will set you back £339. You can find more information on the Scotty Cameron website.

Limited-edition Adidas apparel

Adidas are combining sport and street culture in their new Collection Ø apparel range. The range looks to break down misconceptions about what golf performance apparel looks like. It aims to provide more of a blend between lifestyle and performance golf clothing.

The world’s most expensive iron?

Honma have updated their super-premium line of clubs known as Beres, aimed at golfers with slower swing speeds and providing larger sweet spots for increased ball speeds. The clubs are produced in Sakata, Japan where more than 100 craftsmen work to combine the luxury components.

The range offers options from 2- to 5-star models graded on the technology and materials in the hand-rolled shafts as well as the gold and platinum in the club heads. As well as luxury finishes on the irons, the driver, fairway woods and hybrids can be decorated from a wide palette of colour options.

So how much will they cost?

Phantom X 12.5

Well, the 5-star iron with a ARMRQ high-performance shaft will retail for – wait for it – £4,199.

PER IRON.

For your money you get an iron at the end of a process that takes craftsmen eight years to master.

There are cheaper options though and the Beres set is available in both men’s and women’s ranges with prices starting at a less wallet-busting £329. More information can be found on the Honma website.
