There was fallout from the fallout from the 2024 US Open, which resulted in Rory McIlroy falling out of the field list and declaring he would take time away to process his agonising loss to Bryson DeChambeau.

Ironically, both players won’t be at TPC River Highlands this week, but many of the world’s best players are down to compete at the Travelers Championship for the lion’s share of the elevated purse which is $20 million.

Keegan Bradley won this event on a record-low score last year on 23-under which he probably thought would help him to earn a Ryder Cup spot for Team USA. It didn’t in the end.

Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, Ludvig Aberg, Wyndham Clark, Viktor Hovland, Collin Morikawa, Patrick Cantlay, Brian Harman and Hideki Matsuyama will all compete this week, but who will win?

We have three Travelers Championship best bets for you to take note of. You must gamble responsibly though.

Travelers Championship best bets

Venue: TPC River Highlands, Connecticut, USA

Date: June 20-23, 2024

Course stats: par 70, 6,835 yards

Purse: $20 million

Defending champion: Keegan Bradley (-23)

Xander Schauffele @ 7/1 with bet365

It will be of no surprise to anyone that Xander Schauffele is in this betting column. He has won this tournament before and in five appearances at TPC River Highlands, he has made the top 25 on four occasions.

Not that Schauffele struggles with length off the tee, but this is the PGA Tour’s shortest course, and the American is second in scoring average and fourth in birdie average. There is a chance he could gobble up these holes and challenge for another Travelers Championship title.

7/1 might be a bit skinny and Scottie Scheffler is the obvious threat. But he is a shorter price and he spoke about the concept of burnout after playing averagly at the US Open last week. I can’t see where he’ll find his refreshment if he’s on the road to Connecticut, so to me, Schauffele has a touch of value.

Schauffele hasn’t put a foot wrong this season. He won the PGA Championship and statistically, there is only one player better than him from tee to green and only four players better than him in approaching the green so far on the PGA Tour this season.

Schauffele will give you a good run for your money as he has done for nearly all of his supporters this season.

Brian Harman @ 40/1 with bet365

Brian Harman is an extremely consistent player on the PGA Tour. Although he hasn’t matched the highs of winning The Open in such dominant fashion since that wet week at Hoylake, he almost won the Players Championship in March.

He came tied for 12th at the Heritage and his effort of tied for 21st at the US Open isn’t to be sniffed at either. On this shorter track, Harman might not feel as dwarfed by the bigger hitters and his record at TPC River Highlands is superb. He has finished in the top 10 on five of his last six starts, including coming second to Keegan last year.

The diminutive American has entered a new realm of the golf world since last summer. He is a big game player and he is statistically solid. He is 21st in total strokes gained, 24th in strokes gained in putting and in the top 40 of driving accuracy and proximity to the hole.

40/1 is a silly price for this major champion at a course where he clearly excels. We are approaching his time of year too. After coming tied for second here last year, he came tied for ninth at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, tied for 12th at the Genesis Scottish Open and then he won the Claret Jug on Merseyside.

Travelers Championship best bets

Michael Thorbjornsen @ 140/1

Before Nick Dunlap made history by winning as an amateur on the PGA Tour in January, Michael Thorbjornsen almost did that himself at this tournament in 2022. He came fourth and this week, he is playing on a sponsorship exemption.

His college form out of Stanford University in 2024 is fantastic. He won the Cabo Collegiate Invitational at the start of March and has two runner-up finishes since then. He came 11th at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic on the DP World Tour at the start of the year too.

This is the week of his professional debut after finishing at the top of the PGA Tour U ranking in May and earning PGA Tour membership for the rest of the 2024 and 2025 seasons. He has a bright future and there is no doubt he will harness the memory of his performance in Connecticut two years ago.

At 140/1, you shouldn’t be going crazy, however, I believe Thorbjornsen represents good value and if anything, he is a player to keep an eye on for future weeks and months on the tour.
