Travelers Championship: Everything you need to know

It’s the last of the eight Signature Events in the 2024 PGA Tour schedule, but what do you need to know about the Travelers Championship?

Just a few days on from the US Open, the Travelers Championship takes centre stages as the last Signature Event of the 2024 PGA Tour season.

It has been a season of change on the PGA Tour, with the introduction of the Signature Events. The tour circus will visit TPC River Highlands, as it does every year, for the eighth and final elevated purse tournament before the FedEx Cup Playoffs roll around in August.

As always, TPC River Highlands is the venue for the Travelers Championship. At less than 6,900 yards, expect some low scoring this week in Connecticut.

American Keegan Bradley is the defending champion after his three shot victory in 2023. The likes of Xander Schauffele and Dustin Johnson have both won this event in recent years.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Travelers Championship

When and where will the Travelers Championship take place?

The 2024 edition of the Travelers Championship will take place between June 20-23, and will be played at its regular home of the TPC River Highlands in Crowell, Connecticut.

Who won last season’s Travelers Championship?

American Keegan Bradley was the victor last time out at TPC River Highlands, winning by three shots from Brian Harman and Zac Blair. His score to par of 23-under was one of the lowest of the season.

What is the history around the tournament?

The Travelers Championship dates back to 1952, with the tournament originally known as the Insurance City Open for its first few years.

The event was then renamed to the Greater Hartford Open in the mid-1960s, a name it would hold through to the start of the 21st Century. Due to sponsporship reasons, it was named the Buick Championship from 2003 before becoming the Travelers Championship in 2006.

Wethersfield Country Club held the event for its first three decades, before the event moved to TPC of Connecticut in the mid-1980s. The venue was rebranded as TPC River Highlands in 1991, and the event has remained their ever since.

Billy Casper is the man with the most success at the Travelers, having won the event four times between 1963 and 1973. Bubba Watson is the only other man to have won the tournament on three or more occasions.

Other big names, including Arnold Palmer and Phil Mickelson are two-time winners of the Travelers Championship, with the latter being the last man to win the event in successive years, in 2001 and 2002.

How do golfers qualify to play at the Travelers?

With the event being one of the eight Signature Events on the 2024 PGA Tour schedule, there is a smaller field at TPC River Highlands this week. Only 75 players will take the course come Thursday morning.

There were several ways of getting into the field, with players in the following categories in the field:

  • Top 50 on the FedEx Cup Standings for 2023
  • Aon Next 10 (the ten highest ranked players on the 2024 FedEx Cup Standings, not already exempt)
  • Aon Swing 5 (the top five points earners from the four previous full-field events, that were not already exempt)
  • PGA Tour winners in 2024 (not including additional events)
  • Sponsor exemptions

Is there a cut at the Travelers Championship?

With the tournament being a Signature Event on the PGA Tour, only 75 players enter the week.

Therefore, there is no cut after two days. Instead, all 75 players will feature across all four days of the competition.
