Honda Classic preview: TV times and betting tips
Honda Classic staking plan
Talor Gooch – 2pts e/w @ 30/1 with Bet365
Gooch finished T5 and remained in contention all the way through the famous back nine at Sawgrass. Gooch has made the cut in three out of four attempts at this track, with a T20 finish the pick of the bunch in 2019. His recent form is also impressive, with a 4th place in Houston and a 5th place in Las Vegas this season to add to his finish at the Players. In his last three events, Gooch ranks 20th for SG: Putting and 26th for SG: Around-the-Green. At Sawgrass he also ranked 6th for SG: Approach and 12th for SG: Tee-to-Green, demonstrating strength in all areas of his game at present. In a field that lacks some of the firepower of last week’s event, Gooch will fancy his chances of kicking on and grabbing his first PGA Tour win.
Chris Kirk – 2pts e/w @ 40/1 with Bet365
After taking a break from the sport in 2019 to deal with personal issues, it’s nice to see Kirk back playing great golf again. His recent form suggests he is on the right track, with an 8th place finish at the Arnold Palmer recently and a runner-up finish in Hawaii earlier in the year. In the last three months, Kirk ranks 21st for SG: Tee-to-Green and 6th for SG: Around-the-Green, both of which are key measures for success here. A win at the King and Bear Classic on the Korn Ferry Tour in 2020 will have helped him to rediscover that winning feeling, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see him go close.
Doug Ghim – 1pt e/w @ 55/1 with Bet365
Ghim has really announced himself on the PGA Tour in the past couple of weeks, with moments of quality at both Bay Hill and Sawgrass. He was in contention at the Arnold Palmer heading into the final round, before a dismal 81 saw him finish T36. A similar story followed at the Players Championship, as he shot 41 on the front nine when in contention again on Sunday. The experience of being right up there with some of the best players in the world will surely serve him well, and with many of them missing this week he will fancy his chances to continue his progression. He ranked 14th for SG: Tee-to-Green and 17th for SG: Approach at Sawgrass, which in itself is impressive at one of the toughest tracks on the PGA Tour. As a young player with plenty of potential, he represents great each-way value this week.
Cameron Tringale – 1pt e/w @ 55/1 with Bet365
Since finishing 3rd at the RSM Classic back in November, Tringale has hit a great run of form which includes a T7 at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Before missing the weekend last week, Tringale has made the cut in his last eight events equalling his best run in the last five years. Tringale has made 10 appearances in this event, with his best finish to date coming last year when T27. In the last six months he ranks 32nd for SG: Total, highlighting a general consistency in all aspects of his game. If Tringale can get off to another fast start, he could set up an opportunity to win his first PGA Tour title.
