First Impressions

It’s fair to say that golf shoes are perhaps overlooked when it comes to performance. I have two pairs of golf shoes that fit fine and are comfortable enough, but when I walk on the side of a hill my feet slide out of them. Not ideal for the ankles but entertaining for my playing partners.

Payntr are a relatively new company to enter the golf shoe market. They have designed their shoes with meticulous thought for every detail and an impressive array of technological innovations (I would suggest visiting their website for full details and specs of their shoes). With the Payntr X 004 RS being my new favourite shoe, what does the X 006 RS bring to the table?

Out of the box, they are similar in overall shape and design to their other shoes. They have produced a distinct shape with a simple “X” logo. I could tell from a distance that they are Payntr shoes. The pair I tested were black overall and definitely have a modern, tasteful vibe to them. This is a spiked model (although Payntr do spikeless models too).

On Course Testing

It’s difficult to describe the spec without simply parroting the website. Nevertheless, the overarching message is there is tech and innovation in every part. The clarino microfiber upper delivers lightweight support and flexibility. The Pebax propulsion plate allows golfers to harness ground reaction forces more effectively. This seems to be an important area of golf coaching now. The neverwet superhydrophobic solution offers non-wicking water resistant protection and breathability. The whole shoe has been designed to maximise support, comfort and grip, seemingly without compromise. The Patel footbed claims to compress less than 5% over the lifetime of the shoe, which would maintain comfort.

These are extremely comfortable, as comfortable as any golf shoe I have tried. As per the X 004 RS my initial impression was that they might perhaps be a little snug towards the front. For certain models, Payntr say on their website to go down a half size for a more natural fit. This wasn’t on the 006 RS info, however, my experience was the same as the 004 RS. Within a few minutes of walking around the house, it became apparent the fit was spot on. As with any shoes it’s worth wearing them around the house for a while to check they are the correct size.

Moving on to golfing in them. My previous experience of shoes this comfortable was that they had the structural integrity of a sponge pudding. Payntr do seem to have put their money where their mouth is with these shoes, and they provide excellent support and extreme comfort. The design puts rigidity towards the back of the shoe and flexibility towards the front. This support is apparent when walking on uneven ground, on hillsides and when playing shots. They use Softspike’s Tour Flex Pro spike with the tech described as providing three degrees of traction control and 10 points of contact. In practice, this means they are as grippy as any shoe as I have worn.

I’m sure many golfers, like me, have not given enough thought to the performance of their shoes. A relatively new kid on the block, Payntr have taken shoe design to the next level. Comfort and support, in my experience, were always a trade-off. The Payntr X 006 RS has done everything to maximise both of these without compromise.
