The Seed SD-02 is designed to promote a lower ball flight with maximum ball speed. These performative traits are similar to that of the Titleist Pro V1x and the TaylorMade TP5x, but do they stack up to their level? Here’s what we thought…

5 star review
NCG SUMMARY

Seed are known for producing high end golf balls for reasonable prices. Their latest tour-inspired offering is no exception and should be a strong contender to put in your golf bag.

The Seed SD-02 promotes good distances off the tee that rival that of other X golf balls, like the Titleist Pro V1x. This is aided by quick ball speeds. The performance levels don’t lower with a shorter club in hand as there is plenty of spin available for a variety of chip shots.

PROS

  • Very strong distances off the tee
  • Promotes quick ball speeds
  • Sounds fast of the club face

CONS

  • None

First Impressions

They certainly look the real deal. Seed don’t seem to have cut any corners when it comes to the looks and finish. Often when you pick a cheaper golf up it doesn’t look right, the finish doesn’t allow the ball to sit nicely and the text looks cheap.

These Seed golf balls have none of these concerns and I think they look great. I love how the brand has decided to keep the design simple. They look very similar to that of the Seed SD-01 model with simplicity being key to the design of both.

It also feels like a premium product, that is more important.

HOW I UNDERTOOK THE REVIEW

I tested the Seed SD-02 golf ball at my home course Hickleton Golf Club over a series of rounds as well as an indoor studio to gather data using a GC3.

WHAT I FOUND

Starting off with a pitching wedge, the data table below shows my results. All of the data below I was pleased with. My carry distance was strong at an average of 118 yards. Spin would perhaps be on the low side for some but I don’t generate a whole load of spin with my irons. I liked how consistent the data, overall very impressed.

Urethane cover

Possibly the most important piece of tech Seed have utilised in these golf balls is a urethane cover. Urethane is usually found in more premium golf balls and is tour preferred. It is the material of choice for the likes of Titleist and TaylorMade in the marquee golf ball ranges. This gave me a lot of hope going into testing.

Iron performance

Switching the attention to the performance of the golf ball with an iron in hand. The data table below shows how the Seed SD-02 compared to a Titleist ProV1x.

To start with, ball speed and launch was almost identical. The spin rates were also very close knit with the ProV1x giving less than 100RPM more. The carry numbers also a similar average that I was very pleased with in terms of distance. I was also very pleased with the comparative height between the two.

I think Seed has also done a great job with the sound of the golf ball. It doesn’t sound as metallic as other cheaper golf balls but has a quick sound similar to that of premium products. Overall a very impressive performance with irons from the Seed SD-02!

Off the tee

Again with driver I was interested to see how the Seed SD-02 would stand up against the Titleist ProV1x. The data tables below show the results and they’re very impressive! Carry distance with the Seed exceeded the ProV1x by 5 yards. It produced a slightly lower spin rate too. One downside I found with the Seed was the fluctuation in spin rates. The second shot for example had a significant drop off whereas the ProV1x was much more consistent.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Overall, I was impressed with the performance of the Seed SD-02 golf ball. They really make you beg the question why us club golfers would go and spend over £40 on a box of golf balls. Seed has produced a golf ball that really isn’t far off the mark of some tour-preferred golf balls for half the price.

    Wedge performance

When hitting around or into the greens with a wedge in hand I think the ball flight is marginally too high for optimal performance. I much prefer a level trajectory with more control.

However, when it comes to low and half shots in particular this golf ball produces a lot of spin of the greens. It is a great ball for someone who likes to hit a variety of chip shots and manipulate the loft. The Seed SD-02 golf ball will give you a lot of stopping power.
