  • The details

Vokey wedges continue to dominate professional golf. They have been the most played wedges on the PGA Tour since 2004, and in 2025 alone they accounted for more than half of all wedges used by the world’s best.

Players gaming at least one Vokey wedge won 26 PGA Tour events during the season, including the PGA Championship and The Open Championship.

Here’s a deeper dive into the new Vokey SM11 wedges and why they might feature just as much on tour next year…

Vokey Design SM11 Wedges: The Technology

Previous Vokey wedges have had their centre of gravity positioned in slightly different areas depending on the loft. For the SM11s, Vokey has worked to create identical CG placements within a given loft, independent of grind.

This change allows for a more consistent flight and feel regardless of grind option golfers are fitted into.

Vokey Design SM11 Wedges

They feature three progressive CG placements that change by loft to optimise performance.

In lower-lofted wedges, the CG is positioned lower and closer to the centre of the face to promote a smooth transition from your irons. It also works to reduce excessive draw bias on full swings.

In sand wedge lofts of 54 and 56 degrees, the CG sits in a more balanced position. Its used to support versatility across full shots and finesse shots.

Then lob wedges, the CG is positioned higher and more towards the heel. This helps to produce a lower, more controlled trajectory and helps the club face to remain more square through impact.

Like the CG, there are three distinct groove shapes which vary based on loft. Pitching and gap wedges use narrower, deeper grooves to maximise control on full swings.

Whereas sand wedges bridge the gap between full shots and partial shots with a blended groove profile.

And then lob wedges feature wider, shallower grooves designed to better manage debris and maintain spin on open-face and greenside shots.

Additionally, SM11 wedges have a new directional face texture that increases friction and keeps the ball on the face for a longer period at impact. This increases the spin control on more delicate shots around the greens.

To extend performance longevity, SM11 wedges undergo a high-frequency heat treatment that is applied directly to the impact area.

Vokey Design SM11 Wedges: A Closer Look

The Vokey SM11 lineup features 27 unique loft, bounce and grind configurations, spread across six tour-proven grinds: F, S, M, D, K and T.

Several notable updates have been made to the lineup. The .06K Grind, which was used to win both the PGA Championship and The Open Championship in 2025, is available at launch in 58- and 60-degree lofts.

A new 44.10F wedge has also been introduced. Ideal for golfers who want the performance and look of a Vokey pitching wedge but require a stronger loft than 46°. This helps with gapping.

About the author

Max Mcvittie

A bit of a late bloomer to the game of golf, Max fell in love with the sport when he attended Saturday coaching sessions down at his local golf club after being inspired by friends and family members.

Max has remained a member of Eden Golf Club in Carlisle for a number of years now as he looks to get his handicap down into single figures. Most of his golfing career has been spent battling a permanent slice off the tee, which has led to some ugly rounds.

Having studied at the University of Sunderland, Max is starting out his dream career in sports journalism. During his time at university, he picked up valuable work experience at Reach PLC, BBC Radio Cumbria and GiveMeSport, whilst also getting work published in the Teesside Live. He also spent time working at a local weekly newspaper, Eskdale and Liddesdale Advertiser, as a general news reporter partially covering some local sport just north of the border in Langholm.

Max has just started his journey with the NCG working as the assistant equipment editor. He looks forwarded to reviewing the latest golf equipment, taking up an interest in reviews when buying his first golf club, a Cleveland RTX wedge.

With his bag not going under too many changes throughout the last few years, Max carries an M3 driver, Titleist GT3 Fairway Wood, M2 hybrid, a set of M2 irons, Callaway Jaws wedges and a TaylorMade Spider putter. And yes, Max is a bit of a self-proclaimed TaylorMade fan boy.
