As golfers age, the game inevitably evolves. Swing speeds slow, flexibility decreases, and shots that once soared may begin to fall short. But growing older doesn’t mean sacrificing performance or enjoyment. With the right equipment, especially the right golf club shaft, senior golfers can regain lost distance, improve launch conditions, and enjoy the game with less strain and fatigue.

We sat down with the experts at KBS shafts to to find out everything there is to know about the best shafts for senior golfers. Whether you’re looking to reclaim lost yards or simply reduce the wear and tear on your joints, the right shaft could be your game’s secret weapon.

In this guide we have highlighted what characteristics should seniors look for in a golf shaft, why a lighter, more flexible shaft often recommended for older players and if graphite shafts generally better suited for seniors than steel, as well as much more. Here’s how you’ll know you have the right shafts…

What characteristics should seniors look for in a golf club shaft?

They should prioritize features that help maximize distance, improve launch, and reduce strain, especially as swing speed and flexibility naturally decline with age.

Why is a lighter, more flexible shaft often recommended for older players?

The benefits of lighter shafts would include an increased swing speed; a reduce in fatigue and joint strain; plus, make it easier to square the clubface at impact.

A Senior (A) or Regular (R) flex shafts would be recommended to help promote higher ball flight, allow for easier loading of the shaft during the swing and improve energy transfer, especially at slower swing speeds.

Are graphite shafts generally better suited for seniors than steel?

It depends on the player really. Some would benefit from the lighter more flexible shaft, but some may still have the ball speed required and prefer the feel of a steel shaft. We fit the player for the shaft, not the shaft for the player, regardless of age.

Which specific shaft models are known to help seniors regain distance?

KBS offers several shaft models designed with lighter weight, increased flex, and higher launch characteristics, all of which are ideal for senior golfers. I’d pick out 4 shafts that would offer the best results:

KBS TGI (Tour Graphite Iron) – Designed to mimic the feel of steel while offering the vibration dampening and lightweight benefits of graphite. The higher launch and spin profiles help maximize carry distance and offers excellent transitioning from steel to graphite or those seeking more forgiveness.

KBS MAX Graphite – Specifically engineered for players with slower swing speeds. The MAX promotes maximum distance and peak trajectory and great for seniors who need help getting the ball airborne and optimizing carry.

KBS Max 80 – A good option for seniors who prefer steel but want a lighter, higher-launching shaft.

KBS Tour 90 – One of the lightest steel shafts in KBS’s lineup, offering an easy transition for those used to traditional steel. Helps increase swing speed and launch angle for better distance.

How can the right shaft help prevent joint strain and fatigue?

Because it’s putting less strain on the body throughout every swing. If it’s easier to swing and the golfer can still get the reps in, then the less strain will happen.

Should senior golfers still consider custom fitting, even with slower swing speeds?

Yes, senior golfers should absolutely consider custom fitting, even with slower swing speeds. In fact, custom fitting can be especially beneficial for senior players by ensuring shafts have the right flex and weight to match a senior golfer’s tempo and strength. Slower swing speed doesn’t make fitting less important – it makes it more essential. A professional fitting ensures you’re getting the most out of your game, regardless of age or speed.

About the author

Max Mcvittie

A bit of a late bloomer to the game of golf, Max fell in love with the sport when he attended Saturday coaching sessions down at his local golf club after being inspired by friends and family members.

Max has remained a member of Eden Golf Club in Carlisle for a number of years now as he looks to get his handicap down into single figures. Most of his golfing career has been spent battling a permanent slice off the tee, which has led to some ugly rounds.

Having studied at the University of Sunderland, Max is starting out his dream career in sports journalism. During his time at university, he picked up valuable work experience at Reach PLC, BBC Radio Cumbria and GiveMeSport, whilst also getting work published in the Teesside Live. He also spent time working at a local weekly newspaper, Eskdale and Liddesdale Advertiser, as a general news reporter partially covering some local sport just north of the border in Langholm.

Max has just started his journey with the NCG working as the assistant equipment editor. He looks forwarded to reviewing the latest golf equipment, taking up an interest in reviews when buying his first golf club, a Cleveland RTX wedge.

With his bag not going under too many changes throughout the last few years, Max carries an M3 driver, Titleist GT3 Fairway Wood, M2 hybrid, a set of M2 irons, Callaway Jaws wedges and a TaylorMade Spider putter. And yes, Max is a bit of a self-proclaimed TaylorMade fan boy.
