Which US college has produced the most Masters champions?

College golf is the pathway that many top players have taken to a professional career, and the very best went on to win the Masters

Before a player becomes a major champion, it is common to build experience and mentality in the US college ranks.

It was a proud moment for Texas University to see Scottie Scheffler win his first Masters in 2022 and the Longhorns were beaming brighter when Scheffler won his second Green Jacket in 2024.

Texas is one of a handful of schools that have produced Masters champions, multiple Masters champions too. Scheffler followed in the footsteps of Jordan Spieth and Ben Crenshaw as Texas alumni to master America’s most famous golf course.

Tiger Woods delivered five Green Jackets for Stanford University and the legendary Tom Watson whose nine-major tally included two wins down Magnolia Lane in Georgia.

Phil Mickelson won his first major title at the 2004 Masters and went on to deliver three Masters trophies for Arizona State University to boast about.

We have noted down every Masters winner since Carry Middlecoff in 1955 and which US college they attended. Not all of them did study in America, such as Seve Ballesteros, Sir Nick Faldo and Jose Maria Olazabal – three of the early European conquerors of April’s major.

If we’re talking about how many Green Jackets belong to a single college, Stanford wins the gold medal. Founded in 1885 by the railroad magnate Leland Stanford, the college boasts seven Masters titles, largely down to Woods.

Woods won down Magnolia Lane for the fifth time in 2019 and the legendary Watson won the Masters in 1977 and 1981.

But if we look at which college has produced the most individual Masters champions, we look to Texas which has seen three former students celebrate at Augusta National. Crenshaw won the Masters for the first time in 1984 and again 11 years later, Spieth romped to victory in 2015 and Scheffler is a two-time champion.

Only four institutions have produced different Masters winners. We have Stanford, Texas, Arizona State and Houston. Mickelson is an expert on the Georgia course, owning a trio of Green Jackets and his fellow ASU alumni Jon Rahm followed in his footsteps in 2023.

Fred Couples and Fuzzy Zoeller both attended Houston and respectively won the Masters in 1992 and 1979. Zoeller was the first player to win the tournament on his debut, beating Ed Sneed in a playoff. No player had won the event at their first attempt since Gene Sarazen in 1935.

23 different colleges in total can say they had a Masters winner walking their halls at one stage. Honourable mentions should go to Ohio State which can claim Jack Nicklaus’ six Green Jackets, the same for Wake Forest with Arnold Palmer’s four Green Jackets and Bubba Watson’s duo for Georgia.
