Patrick Reed is one of golf’s most fractious characters. He is a former Masters champion and recently ended his stint in the LIV Golf League.

Reed was born in August 1990 in San Antonio, Texas, and took up the game from an early age. He had a successful collegiate career, even though he had to leave the University of Georgia after being suspended. He moved to Augusta State University and was a three-time All-American, and made the last four of the US Amateur Championship.

He turned professional in 2011, before making it on to the PGA Tour just a couple of years later. He grabbed his first professional victory that year, 2013, at the Wyndham Championship, and went on to win nine times on the PGA Tour. Those wins included the peak of his career, when he won the Masters Tournament in 2018. Reed also has two FedEx Cup Playoffs wins and two World Golf Championships to his name.

In the summer of 2022, the American was part of the original group to join the brand new LIV Golf League, thus giving up his membership on the PGA Tour. As part of 4Aces GC, Reed tasted success alongside team captain Dustin Johnson, with the team winning the Team Championship in the league’s first year. He claimed his first victory in the series in Dallas in 2025, winning the event in a playoff.

He then started the 2026 season on fire on the DP World Tour, following his departure from the LIV Golf League. as he claimed his first Rolex Series win at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic in January 2026. Two weeks later, the American was victorious for a second time, winning the Qatar Masters.

Reed played for the United States in the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup over a six-year stint from 2014 to 2019, with three appearances in each competition. He helped the USA to win all three Presidents Cup in that time, along with the 2016 Ryder Cup at Hazeltine.

Mention a European country, and Matt will tell you which resorts make the National Club Golfer Top 100s: European Resorts list. He might even throw in who designed the golf course and how many rooms the hotel has got at each one…

Matt got into the game of golf from a young age, following his old man to the local golf club. He fell for the sport, and now can’t seem to go a day without thinking about how to improve his game (Thanks Dad!). Matt has been a member of Howley Hall GC in Leeds since 2020, and is just about managing to maintain a single-figure handicap. He likes to remind people that he once broke 75, but won’t tell people that it was on a shortened course during the winter.

He moved to Leeds after graduating from the University of Central Lancashire with a First Class Honours degree in Sports Journalism. Matt joined NCG after almost five years travelling the world with the Professional Squash Association, working on events in all four corners of the globe.

Matt currently plays a Cobra King LTDx driver and RadSpeed 3-wood. TaylorMade monopolise the rest of his bag, with a SIM UDI, M5 irons and both Milled Grind and HI-TOE wedges, along with a Monza Redline putter. He uses a Vice Pro Plus golf ball, because he’s a bit different…

Away from golf, Matt is a Manchester United fan, and a keen runner, having ran the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon (his first and possibly last), in May 2023.
