Anthony Kim spent more than a decade away from the game, but remains one of the most talked about players in the sport.

Kim was born in June 1985 in Los Angeles, and would go on to play at the University of Oklahoma, where he set the average scoring record during his time there. He also featured for the United States at the Walker Cup during his amateur career, helping the team win the 2005 edition.

He turned professional after graduating, and immediately caused a stir, finishing T2 on his PGA Tour debut at the Valero Texas Open. He earned his card for the 2007 season, and would only have to wait 18 months before his first win. That came at the Wachovia Championship, with victories to follow at the AT&T National and the Shell Houston Open. He was a part of the winning American sides at the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup at Valhalla and Harding Park, respectively.

Kim’s career continually rose until he started to suffer from a litany of injuries. Following surgery to repair an injured Achilles tendon in 2012, Kim never returned to the PGA Tour. He is believed to have had an insurance policy that would pay out if he suffered a career-ending injury. More than decade went by without seeing the American in the golfing world, but that changed when it was announced he would play in the LIV Golf League as a wildcard player in the 2024 season.

The comeback story had more ups and downs over the next two years. He would be relegated from the LIV Golf League at the end of the 2025 season, before then fighting back to earn a place in the league for the 2026 campaign via the LIV Golf Promotions event. Kim then signed for Dustin Johnson‘s 4Aces GC, following the departure of Patrick Reed, and then secured his first victory in 16 years with an incredible win at LIV Golf Adelaide that February.

Mention a European country, and Matt will tell you which resorts make the National Club Golfer Top 100s: European Resorts list. He might even throw in who designed the golf course and how many rooms the hotel has got at each one…

Matt got into the game of golf from a young age, following his old man to the local golf club. He fell for the sport, and now can’t seem to go a day without thinking about how to improve his game (Thanks Dad!). Matt has been a member of Howley Hall GC in Leeds since 2020, and is just about managing to maintain a single-figure handicap. He likes to remind people that he once broke 75, but won’t tell people that it was on a shortened course during the winter.

He moved to Leeds after graduating from the University of Central Lancashire with a First Class Honours degree in Sports Journalism. Matt joined NCG after almost five years travelling the world with the Professional Squash Association, working on events in all four corners of the globe.

Matt currently plays a Cobra King LTDx driver and RadSpeed 3-wood. TaylorMade monopolise the rest of his bag, with a SIM UDI, M5 irons and both Milled Grind and HI-TOE wedges, along with a Monza Redline putter. He uses a Vice Pro Plus golf ball, because he’s a bit different…

Away from golf, Matt is a Manchester United fan, and a keen runner, having ran the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon (his first and possibly last), in May 2023.
