Following on from the Florida Swing, the PGA Tour takes its circus to Texas for the next two weeks, starting with the Texas Children’s Houston Open.

The tournament was first played almost eight decades ago, dating back to its original edition in 1946.

The Texas Children’s Houston Open made the move to Memorial Park for the 2020 edition, having been held at the venue on 14 occasions between 1947 and 1963.

Recent winners of the tournament include Tony Finau, Lanto Griffin, Ian Poulter, and Russell Henley.

What is the history around the Texas Children’s Houston Open?

The Texas Children’s Houston Open dates back to 1946, with Byron Nelson and Bobby Locke being the winners in the competition’s first couple of years as a PGA Tour event.

For the majority of its history, the tournament was played in the weeks preceding the Masters Tournament, before moving to the fall with the inception of the wraparound season on the PGA Tour in 2019.

For the next four years, the event was played in October/November and part of the next year’s season. With the PGA Tour moving back to a calendar year schedule for 2024, the Texas Children’s Houston Open has returned to its traditional March slot, two weeks before Augusta.

Over the years, the tournament has gone by many names due to sponsorship reasons – with Michelob, Coca-Cola and Shell all being the title sponsor. 2024 sees the event renamed the Texas Children’s Houston Open.

As with sponsors, the tournament has also been played at several different venues, before returning to Memorial Park for the 2021 edition of the event.

Some big names have won the tournament over the years, including Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Payne Stewart, Vijay Singh, Adam Scott and Phil Mickelson.

How do golfers qualify to play at Memorial Park?

As with most full-field events on the PGA Tour, there is a system for determining who will feature in every event. These factors include the current season’s Priority Ranking, along with other exemptions and qualifying categories.

  • Winners of the PGA Championship and US Open in the last five years
  • Winners of World Golf Championships events in the last three years
  • Winners of the Arnold Palmer Invitational, Memorial Tournament of Genesis Invitational in the last three years
  • Past Champions of the Texas Children’s Houston Open
  • PGA Tour event winners in the last two years
  • Top 30 in the FedEx Cup points list for the 2024 season
  • Top 70 in the FedEx Cup points list through the FedEx Cup Playoffs of the 2022-2023 season
  • Top 125 in the FedEx Cup Standings following the FedEx Cup Fall Series of the 2022-2023 season
  • Players 2-10 on the DP World Tour Rankings for the 2022-2023 season
  • Top 30 on the 2022-2023 season’s Korn Ferry Tour standings

Is there a cut at the Texas Children’s Houston Open?

The Texas Children’s Houston Open is a Full-Field event on the PGA Tour, meaning that there will be a cut.

Those that are within the top 70 and ties will make it through to the weekend to have a shot at winning the Texas Children’s Houston Open.

Can LIV Golf players play at Memorial Park?

No, they cannot. With the Texas Children’s Houston Open being an official PGA Tour event, we won’t be seeing any LIV Golf players teeing it up in Harris County.

Three of the last five winners – Ian Poulter, Carlos Ortiz and Jason Kokrak – all ply their trade in the LIV Golf League now, and will not be able to win in Houston again.

How can I watch the Texas Children’s Houston Open?

The event will be broadcast around the world by various broadcast partners. In the United Kingdom, action from all four days of the tournament will be shown live on Sky Sports – with the following schedule:

  • Thursday 28th – Sky Sports Golf from 12:30pm
  • Friday 29th – Sky Sports Golf from 12:30pm
  • Saturday 30th – Sky Sports Golf from 3pm
  • Sunday 31st – Sky Sports Golf from 4pm, Sky Sports Main Event from 10:30pm

How much will the winner take home from Memorial Park?

The winner of the the tournament will pocket $1,638,000 from the total prize purse of $9,100,000.
