Following an incredible finish to the PGA Championship on Sunday, the Charles Schwab Challenge takes place on the PGA Tour this week.

The Colonial Country Club has played host to the tournament ever since its inception on the PGA Tour. The entirety of its eight-decade history comes via Fort Worth, Texas.

The event has been part of golfing history as well, with Annika Sorenstam playing in 2003, while the 2020 edition was the first event back after the enforced break due to COVID-19.

Ben Hogan is a five-time winner of the tournament, and there is even a statue of the great man outside the clubhouse at Colonial.

Recent winners of the Charles Schwab Challenge include Jordan Spieth, Justin Rose, Daniel Berger, Sam Burns and Emiliano Grillo (below), who will aim to defend his title in 2024.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Charles Schwab Challenge

When and where will the Charles Schwab Challenge take place?

The 2024 edition of the Charles Schwab Challenge will take place between May 23-26, with the event being played at the Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas.

Who won last season’s tournament?

Argentina’s Emiliano Grillo was the victor of last year’s event, defeating Adam Schenk in a playoff. The winning score of 8-under was the highest to par since Dan Pohl won with a score of -5 back in 1986. The win was Grillo’s second on the PGA Tour, and his first since 2015.

What is the history around the Charles Schwab Challenge?

The event dates back to 1946, and for the entirety of its eight-decade history, the Charles Schwab Challenge has been played at the Colonial Country Club.

Like the Masters, RBC Heritage and other events around the world, a piece of clothing is given to the winner of the tournament. A Scottish tartan plaid jacket is bestowed on the victor’s shoulders, honouring the history of the sport.

The tournament has had several major moments. Annika Sorenstam’s appearance in the 2003 edition of the tournament was a historic one. The Swede became the first female participant in a PGA Tour event for almost six decades, and one of just seven to date to have done so.

The 2020 event of the Charles Schwab Challenge was a unique one. It was the first event to be held in the COVID-19 pandemic, becoming the first PGA Tour event to be played without fans.

Over the years, only one man has won the tournament more than twice. That was the great Ben Hogan, with whom the tournament associated with. His five wins came in 1946, 1947, 1952, 1953 and 1959, and there is a statue of the nine-time major winner near the clubhouse at Colonial.

The likes of Lee Trevino, Ben Crenshaw, Corey Pavin, Nick Price, Phil Mickelson and Zach Johnson have all won the Charles Schwab Challenge on multiple occasions.

How do golfers qualify to play in Fort Worth?

The Charles Schwab Challenge is one of five ‘invitational’ tournaments on the PGA Tour. As such, there are slightly different categories for players to reach to make the field for the event.

Here are the categories of entries for the 2024 edition:

  • Former winners of the Charles Schwab Challenge
  • Winners of the PGA Championship, US Open, Open Championship and Players Championship in the last five years
  • FedEx Cup Champions in the last five years
  • Winners of the Memorial Tournament in the last three years
  • Winners of a PGA Tour event in the last two years
  • Members of the most recent Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup teams
  • Top 15 and ties from last year’s Charles Schwab Challenge

Mention a European country, and Matt will tell you which resorts make the National Club Golfer Top 100s: European Resorts list. He might even throw in who designed the golf course and how many rooms the hotel has got at each one…

Matt got into the game of golf from a young age, following his old man to the local golf club. He fell for the sport, and now can’t seem to go a day without thinking about how to improve his game (Thanks Dad!). Matt has been a member of Howley Hall GC in Leeds since 2020, and is just about managing to maintain a single-figure handicap. He likes to remind people that he once broke 75, but won’t tell people that it was on a shortened course during the winter.

He moved to Leeds after graduating from the University of Central Lancashire with a First Class Honours degree in Sports Journalism. Matt joined NCG after almost five years travelling the world with the Professional Squash Association, working on events in all four corners of the globe.

Matt currently plays a Cobra King LTDx driver and RadSpeed 3-wood. TaylorMade monopolise the rest of his bag, with a SIM UDI, M5 irons and both Milled Grind and HI-TOE wedges, along with a Monza Redline putter. He uses a Vice Pro Plus golf ball, because he’s a bit different…

Away from golf, Matt is a Manchester United fan, and a keen runner, having ran the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon (his first and possibly last), in May 2023.
