Golf form expert Barry Plummer has everything you need to know from Austin Country Club

It’s that time of year again where we all start pretending we know how the bracket system works at the WGC-Dell Match Play! Below you’ll find who I fancy to take the title in Austin, but first…

WGC-Dell Match Play details

Venue: Austin Country Club, Texas, USA

Date: March 24-28, 2021

Course stats: Par 71; 7,082 yards.

Course summary: A typical Pete Dye track, packed with perilous bunkers, water hazards and undulating surfaces. The tree-lined fairways weave towards small Bermuda grass greens, and with wind a likely factor players will rely heavily on accuracy from tee to green. This strategic test boasts reachable par-5s and a driveable par-4, with a distinct change in terrain after the 6th hole as the players head into the hills. Fitness and fatigue will play a part in this event, with plenty of golf to be played for those progressing to the latter stages.

Format: 64 players battle it out in 16 round robin groups over the first three days, with the winner of each group progressing to the weekend. On Saturday and Sunday, players compete in knockout matches en-route to the final with the top four players racking up seven rounds of golf over five days.

Purse: $10.5 million

Defending champion: Kevin Kisner (3&2 win over Matt Kuchar in 2019)

WGC-Dell Match Play betting tips

As usual, I’m joined by NCG’s Steve Carroll to discuss my betting tips for the WGC-Dell Match Play on the Dialled In podcast. I’ve picked out a couple of winners – selected once I saw the draw – and I’ll be back later in the week to add more selections. So keep an eye out!

Weekend pick: Victor Perez – 4pt win @ 7/2 with Bet365

Perez absolutely obliterated two quality opponents yesterday, which leaves me slightly baffled as to why he is the outsider of the four remaining players. A classy performance against MacIntyre had the match wrapped up by the 14th hole, and his quarter final match against record Ryder Cup points scorer Sergio Garcia only went one hole further before dumping him out of the competition. A semi-final against Billy Horschel, who only narrowly edged out Streelman and Fleetwood to qualify, should give Perez a great opportunity to reach the final if he plays close to the standard of yesterday. This tournament represents a golden chance for Perez to get one foot into the Ryder Cup team, and after starting the week on the periphery he will surely be in Harrington’s considerations now.
