WITB: Wade Ormsby – Hong Kong Open
Wade Ormsby had a secret weapon for his maiden European Tour win at the UBS Hong Kong Open.
Yep, just look at that moustache. I’m calling it a semi-handle bar and it was certainly enough to scare off the chasing pack on Sunday.
You know I’m joking, but he’s not the only Australian to be intimidating his rivals with a Movember effort. Just check the cricket score…
Anyway, it’s a beaut of a tache – straight from the 1980s but there are a couple of clubs in Ormsby’s bag which are also invoking feelings of nostalgia.
Ormsby is a Titleist staff player and has pretty much a bag full of their latest equipment – but he’s snuck a couple of old-skool Adams hybrids in there too.
We don’t hear much from Adams these days which is a shame because they were responsible for some of the best hybrids around.
Everyone has played an Adams hybrid at some point right?
The Adams brand was bought out by TaylorMade-Adidas golf just over five years ago and continued to make great clubs before being gradually phased out as Adidas looked to sell off it’s golfing brands which also included Ashworth.
So we don’t see many Adams hybrids on tour now as they haven’t made any ‘better-player’ gear for some time but it wasn’t that long ago when then were the number one hybrid model on tour.
Ormsby had a couple of Idea Pro models in the bag for his Hong Kong victory including the rare VST model.
He also relied on the Titleist 917 driver and 3-wood and had a combination of the brand new 718 MB and CB irons.
More than 70 percent of tour players have a mixed set of irons with many opting for a bit more forgiveness in the longer irons.
He uses the Titleist Vokey SM6 wedges, Scotty Cameron Futura X5R putter and chooses the Titleist Pro V1x golf ball.
