Wilson Staff Model ZM Wedge Review: First Impressions

Classic minimalism

Wilson has been on an upward trend recently with its club designs, and I think the Wilson Staff Model ZM Wedge is another example of that. Right from my first glance, I thought the classic Wilson branding stood out. It combines a nostalgic nod to its heritage with a modern edge. The clean lines and refined aesthetics are further highlighted by subtle design elements like the engraved Forged, ZM Grooves, and the iconic Staff logo. It’s a minimalist’s dream that shows elegance, sophistication, and decidedly premium all without being flashy.

NCG Verdict

Enhanced spin

Starting off with the tech, the Staff Model ZM Wedge is forged from 8620 carbon steel which helps to increase durability. Wilson has also introduced deeper ZM grooves, paired with a Garnet Face Blasting treatment. This clever bit of engineering increases friction on the face, allowing the ball to stick longer during contact, resulting in enhanced spin. I found this to be particularly noticeable in both dry conditions during my testing but Wilson say it is also effective in the wet.

Bounce options

When it comes to bounce options, Wilson offers the ZM wedge in 6°, 10°, and 12° bounces across lob to sand wedges, along with a high-toe option. While this is slightly more limited compared to competitors like TaylorMade and Titleist, it still covers a broad spectrum of playing styles and course conditions. Whether you’re dealing with firm fairways or soft bunkers, the ZM wedge has you covered.

Tour staff feedback for improvement

One standout design choice is the elevated center of gravity, inspired directly by feedback from Wilson’s tour staff. This adjustment is intended to keep the ball flight lower and more controlled.

Great all round performance

On the course, I found the ZM wedge to be an absolute workhorse. During testing, it delivered exceptional versatility. From delicate chips and flop shots to longer pitch shots and bunker escapes, the wedge felt incredibly solid. The deeper grooves and face blasting technology translated into remarkable spin control, even in challenging lies. Shots sat down quickly on the green, providing confidence with every strike.

Wilson Staff Model ZM Wedge Review

Heavy feel

The club is equipped with the True Temper Dynamic Gold Spinner wedge shaft, which may contribute to its slightly heavier feel. While this weight adds a bit of muscle behind each shot, it never feels cumbersome. On the other hand, I think it provides a sense of stability through impact that many players will admire.

Opening the face for higher shots or closing it down for punchy, low-spinning approaches was seamless. The clean leading edge also aids alignment, making it easy for me to address the ball with confidence.

Final Verdict

Whole heartedly recommend

Overall, I truly believe Wilson has massively stepped up with the Staff Model ZM Wedge. It’s beautifully crafted, technologically refined, and delivers incredible performance across all types of short-game shots. For golfers who want premium quality without breaking the bank, this wedge is a no-brainer. It’s not just a contender; it’s a standout. This is a wedge I’d happily put in my own bag.

Callaway Epic Max driver review
Jack Backhouse

A member of the PGA for 13 years, Jack has lived golf for more than half his life. Inspired by Tiger Wood’s winning putt at the 2008 US Open, an obsession began with watching slow motion golf swings on the internet and reading What’s In The Bag articles in magazines.

Not destined for a life behind the desk in a pro shop, Jack has focussed more on coaching, working closely with regional teams in North Yorkshire and helping golfers of all levels on their journey to enjoying playing the game more. Jack has coached many junior golfers into the county teams, and once worked with a player at the 2018 Open Championship at Carnoustie.

After letting his game fall apart prior to COVID, Jack rediscovered his love for playing golf after joining Silloth Golf Club in 2020 and whipping round the windy, firm links course. Playing regularly with a half set of clubs he has a passion for shot making and developing skill, and claims to have the sharpest 30-100 yard game in the North of England (only because he doesn’t know anyone in the South), and now maintains a +1 handicap at a club much closer to home, Sand Moor GC.

Jack has always tinkered with his equipment, once building his own Frankenstein one length set of clubs after watching Bryson DeChambeau burst onto the scene after winning the US Amateur. He firmly believes in getting custom fit and is happy to debate anyone about blade irons being superior to any other iron category.

Jack loves: playing quickly, 2 ball golf, match play, heathland courses, pencil bags, foursomes, Tiger Wood’s swing 2005-2009.

Jack hates: buggies, unnecessary trees, giving shots, the 7 iron loft debate, graphite shaft lovers weird superiority complex.
