Men’s G/Fore Gallivan2R G/Lock Saddle Golf Shoe Review: First Impressions

I have admired G/Fore golf kit from afar. They have distinctive classy looking stuff, right down to their logo. This, however, was my first time getting up close and personal with any of their offerings.

I tried out the Gallivan2R G/Lock Saddle men’s shoe in onyx. Even before seeing them I was impressed with the box they came in. A high quality, shocking pink box with a magnetic flap for closure. The shoes themselves were pretty stunning, nailing the mix of classic and modern. I loved the contrast of matt and patent upper. The white sole gave yet another eye-catching contrast. The aglet (yes, that is the word for the little thing at the end of a shoelace) is white, which is a nice touch. They include another pair of laces with black aglets, should one feel the white ones are a step too far. This is one of the best looking golf shoes I have seen for some time.

They are made from entirely man-made materials. The upper is TPU and is waterproof. They have removable and washable massaging insoles and an odour inhibiting lining. G/Fore says that the shoe has an autex lattice midsole, heel counter security and flexibility through flex channels in the sole. Translated that means that when I put them on they were supremely comfortable. The G/Fore website says true to size and I concur. They had a neat fit and felt extremely supportive. The insoles have a bobbled effect (the massaging aspect described above) which was very pleasant when on. G/Fore describe them as ultra-lightweight. I have had very light and comfortable shoes in the past but the support was non-existent. These definitely manage to be supportive, light and comfortable. Up to this point they were really ticking all the boxes and in terms of comfort, support and looks they were 10 out of 10.

On Course Testing

I have owned and tested a vast number of golf shoes over the years. One thing I have found is that, no matter how comfortable/supportive they are when trying them on in a static situation, it can be difficult to predict how they will perform in play. I have bought shoes in an emergency and then within a few yards having teed off, I know they are not going to work. This is not the case with the G/Fore Gallivan2R. The initial impression of support was justified both on the range and in play. They come with Tourflexpro softspikes ® and gave great grip. I tried them out in wet conditions and both the grip and waterproofing performed well.

There are a lot of options in the good-looking, good performing golf shoe market. The G/Fore Gallivan2R G/Lock saddle golf shoe is a strong contender. It’s not the cheapest at around £160 but, in my opinion, the looks and performance can justify this.
