  • Wilson 2026 staff model blade irons review: the details

Wilson has been quietly re-establishing itself as a serious force in the players’ iron category, and the 2026 Staff Model Blade may be their biggest statement yet.

Built with the view of a traditional set of blade irons at its core, these Wilson 2026 Staff Model Blade irons are true muscle backs. With an almost retro look they still combine a design with a nod to the future.

Here’s what we made of them in our full review below…

NCG Summary

National Club Golfer and National Club Golfer magazine

NCG Summary

The Wilson 2026 Staff Model Blade irons are one of the finest traditional musclebacks Wilson has ever produced. Stunning looks, exceptional feel and absolute predictability make them a serious option for skilled players looking to move away from the mainstream blade offerings.

If you’re confident in your ball striking and want a blade that rewards quality strikes while punishing mishits honestly, these deserve a very close look.

PROS

  • Feel incredibly soft
  • Look like a set of blades
  • Offer quality distance control

CONS

  • Not very forgiving on mishits

First Impressions

I think Wilson has absolutely nailed the aesthetics here. At address, the blade is super clean, with a compact head, thin top line, minimal offset and a traditional profile. No complaints there.

The retro drill-through hosel and classic Wilson branding add a timeless touch. I am also a fan of the brushed finish Wilson has opted for, rather than a shinny one. I thought the glare from the sun was a bit of a problem in the old blades, so it’s nice to see that have address this.

There’s no unnecessary design clutter, and nothing to distract the eye. This is a blade that looks exactly how a blade should.

On the range

As you’d expect from a true blade, the performance is all about control and consistency rather than raw distance. Throughout testing I found my carry distances were predictable, the spin was strong, and the front-to-back dispersion was excellent.

Crucially, I didn’t experience any ‘jumpers’ off the face of the clubs. These are low spin shots that tend to travel a bit lower than usually and therefore don’t have much control.

Wilson 2026 Staff Model Blade Irons

Ultimately, my flushed shots went as far as I would expect from a set of blades, with no unwanted surprises on that front. Additionally, mishits simply came up short rather than fly unpredictably long which would make it hard to judge approach shots.

Wilson has also subtly improved mass distribution by removing weight from the hosel and heel and repositioning it toward the toe. This helps centre the sweet spot more effectively, which is particularly impressive for a traditional muscle back design.

I feel the long irons aren’t particularly forgiving and demand a confident and quality strike to optimal use. But, that is the trade-off you would expect these type of irons which offer precision and feedback.

NCG Verdict

This is very much a purists set of irons. I, myself, am a big fan of blade irons as I prefer their more compact look as well as that soft feeling they deliver. The Wilson 2026 Staff Model Blade irons have that in abundance.

It’s a great looking muscle back that delivers impressive consistent and accuracy throughout the set.

About the author

Callaway Epic Max driver review
Jack Backhouse

A member of the PGA for 13 years, Jack has lived golf for more than half his life. Inspired by Tiger Wood’s winning putt at the 2008 US Open, an obsession began with watching slow motion golf swings on the internet and reading What’s In The Bag articles in magazines.

Not destined for a life behind the desk in a pro shop, Jack has focussed more on coaching, working closely with regional teams in North Yorkshire and helping golfers of all levels on their journey to enjoying playing the game more. Jack has coached many junior golfers into the county teams, and once worked with a player at the 2018 Open Championship at Carnoustie.

After letting his game fall apart prior to COVID, Jack rediscovered his love for playing golf after joining Silloth Golf Club in 2020 and whipping round the windy, firm links course. Playing regularly with a half set of clubs he has a passion for shot making and developing skill, and claims to have the sharpest 30-100 yard game in the North of England (only because he doesn’t know anyone in the South), and now maintains a +1 handicap at a club much closer to home, Sand Moor GC.

Jack has always tinkered with his equipment, once building his own Frankenstein one length set of clubs after watching Bryson DeChambeau burst onto the scene after winning the US Amateur. He firmly believes in getting custom fit and is happy to debate anyone about blade irons being superior to any other iron category.

Jack loves: playing quickly, 2 ball golf, match play, heathland courses, pencil bags, foursomes, Tiger Wood’s swing 2005-2009.

Jack hates: buggies, unnecessary trees, giving shots, the 7 iron loft debate, graphite shaft lovers weird superiority complex.
