First impressions

Original Penguin are not a brand for the shrinking violet. Synonymous for being worn by Open champion Cameron Smith, the American company are well known for their colourful and adventurous designs.

Even so, and bearing in mind they’ve produced patterns varying from floral camouflage to the tiny aeroplane figures you’ll see tracking on a flight map, this bunker print polo shirt is still one of their most ostentatious yet.

This will be like golfing Marmite to many of you. You’ll either adore its approach, or it will be just too much. The pattern is vivid and the caviar colour looks almost monotone across its various shades. Whatever stance you take, though, you’ll definitely stand out at your club.

Let’s cut to the technicals. What’s interesting about this particular polo shirt is that it’s good for the environment. While it incorporates a polyester and elastane mix, as do so many other of Original Penguin’s clothing rivals, 30 per cent of polyester used in this product is recycled.

It certainly feels great, both to touch and to wear, but I’d warn you to perhaps be a little flexible in your sizings. I’m usually a medium across the board but I could probably have dropped down into a small here.

As a result, the polo shirt hung a little wider than I would have liked around the waist and stomach but this is nothing that probably couldn’t be fixed with a skinnier fit. That said, I do like my shirts and tops to be a bit closer and this sizing might be exactly to all your tastes.

On-course testing

What do you want from a polo shirt on the course? Ideally, it will be easy to swing in, will regulate temperature, isn’t too heavy – either through the weight of the material itself or through moisture wicking – and will caress rather than chafe.

The Original Penguin Bunker Print Golf Polo Shirt does very well in all of these areas. I’ve mentioned the slightly looser fit compared with some other models I’ve been wearing recently and that does mean there are no restrictions when taking a shot. You’ll move easily and swiftly from backswing to follow through.

It sits nicely on the neck and shoulders and the arms finish at a good length too. The fabric is very soft to the touch, but that doesn’t mean it’s vulnerable. I’m often worried about clicks and pilling with a non-cotton polo shirt but this feels pretty durable. There’s not a mark out of place yet and that’s after several wears.

That also means this garment washes very well. If you’re not a fan of ironing, there is no need to worry. The Original Penguin Bunker Shirt emerges from a dryer with nary a crease.

The 19th hole

How daring are you? If you enjoying being the centre of attention on the course then this will be right up your street. It’s bold, the pattern is vivid, and it’s a bright garment even with the colour tone. It’s very well made, comfortable to wear, and great to swing in.

Fit: True to Size/Small/Large
Comfort: 7/10
Value for Money: 7/10
Sizes: S through XXL
Colour options: Caviar.
