Original Penguin Quilted Pattern Gloves

National Club Golfer and National Club Golfer magazine

What do you need in winter? Winter gloves. The Winter Patterned Pair keep your hands warm on the course, and you can still use them when playing shots—no need to take them off and switch back to a regular glove. The inner lining is comfortable, and the outer look is stylish. The quilted design on the back of the palms adds a nice touch, and the overlapping penguin pattern is a subtle detail. Plus, the fingertips on both gloves are touchscreen-compatible, so you can use your phone without exposing your hands to the cold.

One thing to keep in mind is that wearing both gloves can make gripping your club a bit tricky, especially if you have standard-sized grips. They’re also not fully waterproof—heavy rain might test their limits—but in light rain or drizzle, they’re comfortable and functional.

  • Warm
  • Stylish
  • Touch screen capability

CONS

  • Not waterproof

Original Penguin Rib Cuff Pom Beanie

5 star review

Hats like this can be a bit like marmite – you either love them or hate them! I am a big pom pom fan and so absolutely loved this hat.

With its cozy ribbed cuff and a fun pom on top, it keeps the chill off during those early morning rounds.

The thermal insulation is top-notch, so your head stays toasty no matter the weather. Plus, it adds a touch of personality to your golf look without going over the top.

Whether it’s brisk mornings or chilly afternoons, this beanie is a reliable and stylish choice. It’s simple, functional, and perfect for keeping you comfortable throughout your round.

Original Penguin Golf Core Cuff

5 star review

Original Penguin have released their Golf Core Cuff beanie hat as part of their 2025 Aumtun/Winter collection. This is a solid choice for any golfer looking for a simple piece of headwear that doesn’t compromise on style or comfort. The Core Cuff hat has a fleece lined interior making it exceptionally comfortable and keeps you nice and warm on those colder days, and the simple grey / black colourway with the iconic Original Penguin logo on the front keeps it simple but smart looking. It’s also perfectly suitable for wearing away from the course as well, it will likely double as my cold weather golf and dog walking hat. The Core Cuff will certainly be my go to in coming months, and with it being priced at only £20 I’d certainly consider if you were on the look out for a new winter beanie.

Original Penguin Palm Spring Earl Bucket Hat

4 star review

Original Penguin have released their Palm Spring Earl bucket hat in 2025. This isn’t necessarily for an Autumn / Winter collection and it isn’t waterproof so it would fit more as a fashion statement in the winter but certainly of use for sun protection on those summer days.

The style of the hat is smart, available in two colourways with some smart Penguin branding across the top and on the base of the hat.

I’d definitely be packing it for a golf trip, it rolls up well so is easily stored in your golf bag and could also double up as a windbreaker to stop your hair from wizzing all over the place!

The price point is good, available for only £24.99 it’s well worth considering if you’d like to add to your hat collection.

PROS

  • Clean look
  • Good price point

CONS

  • Style not for everyone

RRP: £21.00

Sizes: S/M & L/XL

Colours: White & Black Iris

Original Penguin Mixed Media ¼ zip Pullover

4 star review

A true measure of a pullover for me is how inclined I’d be to wear it away from the course as well as on it. Original Penguin are masters of cross-purposing, and the Quarter Zip Pullover does the job in fine style. It’s true to size for me – and I prefer a slimmer fit – but the polyester/elastane mix means the pullover stretches and moves with you. That’s perfect for the golf swing. It works really well as it slides, rather than resisting, as you move from backswing to downswing. The Nanotex Aquapel technology repels water-based spills, whether you find yourself in a slight shower or if you spill your drink in the bar afterwards. My only small fear is the fabric, particularly from the chest down, feels like it may be vulnerable to clicks and bobbles with prolonged wear.

PROS

  • Stylish design and great fit
  • Very lightweight – comfortable whether it’s outerwear or part of layering
  • Water spill technology is an interesting addition

CONS

  • Material feels like it is vulnerable to clicks and bobbles

Original Penguin Performance Earl Golf Hoodie

4 star review

Hoodies are becoming all the rage on the golf course these days, and Original Penguin have done their best work with the Performance Earl Golf Hoodie. If you’re a golfer that doesn’t mind the chilly weather, then this hoodie is perfect for you. Made from a single-knit mixture of nylon and elastane, the fabric fits well, but remains stretchy to allow for an unrestricted golf swing. The hood is perfect should you need it to cover your ears at times in between shots, while the material is also moisture wicking should the temperature start heating up while you are out on the course. It is a thinner material than some, so if it does start to get too cold, then you may need to layer up some more, but for that gap between summer and winter, the Performance Earl Golf Hoodie is spot on!

Original Penguin Quarter Zip Colour Block Golf Jacket

National Club Golfer and National Club Golfer magazine

Original Penguin’s Quarter Zip Colour Block Golf Jacket is perfect for those who are still happy to play in rain showers. The water repellent finish is great for those conditions, with the polyester-elastane mixture providing enough stretch to allow for unrestricted movements in the golf swing. The colour design of the navy and white is stylish, with the windbreaker also having the traditional penguin logo on the left chest, along with the words ‘ORIGINAL PENGUIN’ emblazoned down the left side. The jacket has pockets on the front, perfect for keeping your hands warm, along with having enough space to also hold everything you might need while out on the course.

PROS

  • Stylish
  • Warm and comfortable
  • Water repellent

CONS

  • None

Original Penguin Reversible Insulated Golf Gilet

5 star review

Having a gilet is an extremely useful part of you golf attire because you can easily put it over most of your golf outfits to keep you much warmer without restricting your movement.

This reversable jacket does exactly that, the Original Penguin reversable gilet is a very comfortable well made gilet with the added advantage of having two colours on so you can change the look to match it with different outfits for the price of one.

It has pockets on either side of the gilet so you have loads of room to carry your various golf things, I found it particularly useful for carrying things like tees, ball markers on even your score card, as it’s so easy to pull out of the pockets quickly, where these things can be more tricky to grab from your trousers, especially if you have a glove on.

If you are looking for a gilet this winter then the Original Penguin reversable jacket is an excellent choice.

PROS

  • Comfortable
  • Great colour
  • Reversable – 2 in 1!

CONS

  • None

Max Mcvittie

A bit of a late bloomer to the game of golf, Max fell in love with the sport when he attended Saturday coaching sessions down at his local golf club after being inspired by friends and family members.

Max has remained a member of Eden Golf Club in Carlisle for a number of years now as he looks to get his handicap down into single figures. Most of his golfing career has been spent battling a permanent slice off the tee, which has led to some ugly rounds.

Having studied at the University of Sunderland, Max is starting out his dream career in sports journalism. During his time at university, he picked up valuable work experience at Reach PLC, BBC Radio Cumbria and GiveMeSport, whilst also getting work published in the Teesside Live. He also spent time working at a local weekly newspaper, Eskdale and Liddesdale Advertiser, as a general news reporter partially covering some local sport just north of the border in Langholm.

Max has just started his journey with the NCG working as the assistant equipment editor. He looks forwarded to reviewing the latest golf equipment, taking up an interest in reviews when buying his first golf club, a Cleveland RTX wedge.

With his bag not going under too many changes throughout the last few years, Max carries an M3 driver, Titleist GT3 Fairway Wood, M2 hybrid, a set of M2 irons, Callaway Jaws wedges and a TaylorMade Spider putter. And yes, Max is a bit of a self-proclaimed TaylorMade fan boy.
