The Ecco Biom H5 High Top BOA is a daring high-top extension of the Danish brand’s Biom H5 range. It has been turned into a high-top golf boot that can withstand the worst excesses of a British winter. It’s a shoe that will attract the attention of those of us who like to play all-year round and need equipment that allows us to enjoy our golf regardless of the weather.

NCG SUMMARY

A futuristic and stylish take on a style of shoe that has long been of interest to British golfers who play all the year round in a wide variety of conditions. If you want to be able to enjoy your golf even when the rough is wet and the fairways soggy then a boot like this is the only practical solution. In years gone by, that meant giving up on any kind of style and accepting something heavy and unyielding. Not any more. The Ecco Biom H5 High Top Boa is a real winner.

PROS

  • The ultimate item of footwear for the British winter
  • Easy to slide on and off – and you can just wipe the shoes clean after use
  • Surprisingly lightweight

First Impressions

At first glance, these look like shoes designed for another purpose. They really are striking. For those who haven’t used Boa lacing before, it gives you the snuggest possible fit and means your foot simply doesn’t move around in the boot.

Ecco BIOM H5 High Top BOA review

After play, it’s just a click to release the mechanism and you can slide the boot off with a minimum of hassle. For anyone who has wrestled with a pair of boots or wellies in the past to get them off again, worry no more. These shoes will make your life very easy in that regard.

On-course performance

Traction and stability are critical in winter conditions, and this boot really is on your side, thanks to Ecco’s Terra Traction System (ETTS) outsole. It is designed to provide grip in challenging conditions, such as slippy, wet grass and uneven ground. It does all of this while remaining comfortable and allowing your feet to move naturally. It really doesn’t feel like a boot.

If you want to rock the look, a pair of trousers with a narrow fit will show the boots in all their splendour. Equally, if you are wearing them for more practical than fashion-based reasons, a wider trouser or waterproof bottoms will cover the top and they just look like regular shoes.

Ecco BIOM H5 High Top BOA review

The one-piece knitted sock collar hugs your ankle, for a great fit. While the Biom Natural Motion technology helps maintain that low-to-ground feel that many golfers prefer. Personally speaking, I don’t want to feel like I am in any way elevated when playing my shots.

NCG Verdict

The Ecco Biom H5 High Top Boa is a fantastic winter golf boot. The waterproofing, the high-top protection, the precision Boa-inspired fit and the lightweight nature of this boot make it perfectly suited to the demands of British winter golf. For those of us who play our way through through the rain, wind, fog and worse, this is exactly the kind of footwear that you need to have at your disposal. You can also move with total freedom, which is important. The fact you can also clean them easily after use is an added bonus. They also come in black if you prefer that colour for winter golf.
