Wilson Dynapower irons review: NCG Summary

5 star review
NCG SUMMARY

Wilson have created another seriously high-quality game improvement iron.

The Wilson Dynapower irons have to be the longest on the market and produced some unbelievable carry distances.

Not only are they long they are also remarkably consistent and perfect for helping players who need more height and stopping control on their shots.

PROS

  • Extremely long irons
  • Great consistency
  • High launching

CONS

  • Big profile, especially in long irons

First Impressions

The Dynapower irons look really simple and stylish from the back. It is clear Wilson have cleaned up the graphics since the previous D9, and I think the red and black colourway works really nicely.

These are engineered for mid-handicap golfers but designed to appeal aesthetically so lower handicap players who want more distance and forgiveness could also game this iron.

NCG Review

Over the ball, these have your typical game improvement shaping. The top-line is fairly thick, the head size generous, and there is plenty of offset. At address, these are confidence-inspiring for that mid-handicap golfer but probably slightly bigger than something I would typically use.

In terms of distance, I think these have to be some of the longest on the market. Some of my shots with the 5-iron carried over 200 yards. These are not numbers I have ever seen with an iron before. If you are looking for a club to give you all out distance, look no further.

Seeing the carry numbers with the 6-iron and 5-iron honestly had me considering putting them in as long-iron or hybrid replacements because they felt so easy to hit consistently.

Throughout the top of the bag, I saw an extra 15 yards of carry distance from every club, which is insane. This only started to slow down at the bottom end of the bag. The 8-iron went 13 yards longer than my current players’ distance irons, and the 9-iron 7.5 yards further. Perhaps this would cause a slight gapping issue, but you could also easily have the lofts tweaked to get this perfect for your game.

Each section of the club face features variable thickness technology to make more of the club face quick, especially the centre to toe area where most golfers’ shots are hit. I think this is why the distances stayed pretty consistent across a variety of strikes.

Lots of game improvement clubs are very draw-bias, I would say this is true of these to some extent but not excessively. I like the fact these are more neutral, so can be used by a wider variety of golfers.

Despite being long, I also found these really easy to hit. They are high launching, easy to strike, and consistently go in the right direction. These are some of the highest-launching game improvement irons I have tested this year so perfect for people who struggle to get enough height on their shots and want to get more hang time.

My widest dispersion was with the 7-iron, at 35 yards, this was still fairly consistent and wouldn’t get me in too much trouble. I was most impressed with how consistent and easy to control the long irons were. My left-to-right dispersion was barely 20 yards with this club.

Overall this is a really strong game improvement iron and one of the best models I have tested in this category this year.

Testing Protocol

To test this product we gathered data on a Trackman 4 or FlightScope. We used TaylorMade TP5 golf balls for all data collection. The samples we have are either fully fitted for our testers or ordered in our assumed specs. We are then able to optimise performance by swapping shafts and playing with the adjustability. As well as range testing all of the product was tested on course in a comparative environment with other product from the same category. We recognise that no testing process is perfect and just aim to be fair in our treatment, transparent in our process and candid in our feedback.

You’ve probably spent a small fortune to get the set up that’s right for your game, so don’t forget to get specialist insurance from Golf Care to protect your clubs from theft, loss, and accidental damage. Plus, they even cover GPS watches, trolleys, and other golf equipment. With 30% off annual insurance starting from just £26.59, and a free golf gift bundle worth up to £365 including 12 free Srixon balls, it’s a no brainer. CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP.
