WGC-HSBC Champions betting tips and preview

Who is our resident betting expert tipping for glory in the final WGC event of the year?

Sticking with European Tour players, Lucas Bjerregaard (80/1, 6 places) looks a decent bet given that he is playing some sensational golf of late and, at the prices, he looks to have been underrated.

I don’t think it’s unfair to say that the Dane is one of the form players in the world at the moment. His recent form has been incredible: in his last six starts, he has a win, a runner-up finish, and he has only finished outside of the top-nine once.

Despite not playing here before, course form at Sheshan International has proven not to be all that important. In the last five years, both Knox and Johnson have won on their first attempt on this course. Dig a little deeper and you’ll see that Fitzpatrick, Kyle Stanley, Thorbjorn Olesen and Brian Harman have all contended here on their tournament debuts.

Bjerregaard has form on pretty much every type of golf course, so this all-round test should suit him nicely.

Pat Perez WITB

Finally, Pat Perez (125/1, 7 places) might be worth a small each-way bet after impressing last week in Korea.

The eccentric American won the CIMB Classic last year, so he has history in Asia in often sweltering conditions. But interestingly, Perez had a really poor week at the aforementioned CIMB just two weeks ago, on a course that he has played excellently in the past, yet he bounced back last week in Korea, bagging his first solo top-10 finish since the Sentry Tournament of Champions in the very first week of the year.

The 42-year-old ranked eighth in driving accuracy and first in scrambling last week on Jeju Island, so it appears he may have found something in his game and it wouldn’t surprise me to see him piece together another good finish this week on a course where he finished 24th on his debut twelve months ago.
