Rory McIlroy (13/2) may have disappointed at the Masters but it’s not often he’s failed to feature this season and the Players champion definitely has a soft spot for Quail Hollow.
Winner of this tournament in 2010 – his first on the PGA Tour – and in 2015, he has a further four top 10s on this track.
Things haven’t been quite as electric since the course was changed for the PGA Championship in 2017 and his tied 22nd there, and 16th last year, are two of his more disappointing displays.
But I’d always want to keep him on side here, even though he’s the clear favourite, and I’ll be very surprised if he is not in the Sunday hunt.
Phil Mickelson (30/1) was another who disappointed at Augusta and he’s been off the boil since winning yet again at Pebble Beach earlier in the year.
If there’s a course, though, that should be able to perk up Lefty’s spirits then it is this one. Fifth 12 months ago, Mickelson has compiled a further six top 10s since 2009 and that is a phenomenal record.
It’s amazing, actually, that he’s not managed to win but maybe this will be the year and the price is nice enough.
Wells Fargo definitely seems like a horses-for-courses kind of place and that means we should also include the defending champion in our list.
Jason Day (10/1) has only played this layout three times since 2012 but has form figures of ninth, ninth and the victory last year.
Coming off tied 5th at the Masters – I’m not counting the Zurich Classic for obvious reasons – he was also top 10 at the Players and at Pebble Beach.
If his body holds up, there’s no reason why he wouldn’t once again be a serious threat at that price.

A journalist for 25 years, Steve has been immersed in club golf for almost as long. A former club captain, he has passed the Level 3 Rules of Golf exam with distinction having attended the R&A's prestigious Tournament Administrators and Referees Seminar.
Steve has officiated at a host of high-profile tournaments, including Open Regional Qualifying, PGA Fourball Championship, English Men's Senior Amateur, and the North of England Amateur Championship. In 2023, he made his international debut as part of the team that refereed England vs Switzerland U16 girls.
A part of NCG's Top 100s panel, Steve has a particular love of links golf and is frantically trying to restore his single-figure handicap. He currently floats at around 11.
Steve plays at Close House, in Newcastle, and York GC, where he is a member of the club's matches and competitions committee and referees the annual 36-hole scratch York Rose Bowl.
Having studied history at Newcastle University, he became a journalist having passed his NTCJ exams at Darlington College of Technology.
