Valero Texas Open betting tips: Top tips
Billy Horschel (28/1) clearly enjoys himself around TPC San Antonio. Just outside the top 10 a year ago, the former FedEx Cup champion’s record is a model of consistency.
Aside from a missed cut in 2017, Horschel’s recent run reads: 4, 3, MC, 3. He’s shown some good stuff so far this year too – with 8th in the Farmers Insurance Open a standout.
The reason he hasn’t added to his five PGA Tour victories in the last couple of months seems more about his ability to string a full week together.
Horschel has shot below 70 on the opening day in five of his last six outings and he may be worth a punt in the first round leader market.
But if he can prevent the stumbles – the 76 in the second round in Mexico or the 77 to close the Arnold Palmer Invitational – then he is surely showing enough form to compete in this field at that price.
When the big guns haven’t come out to play, Aaron Baddeley (50/1) has been putting together strong PGA Tour weeks.
Tied for runner up at the Puerto Rico Open in February, the Australian was very solid last week in the Dominican Republic when the world’s top 64 were enjoying themselves at the WGC-Match Play.
Baddeley finished tied for 7th and may well have got closer to Graeme McDowell’s winning total but for a final-round 71. That was his worst round of the week by three shots but the opening trio of days should give him a lot of heart in Texas.
With most of the elite resting up ahead of next week’s exertions at Augusta National, Baddeley can draw on a top 20 at the Valero Texas Open a year ago as well as prior finishes of 5th in 2017 and 3rd in 2010.
Elsewhere, if Jordan Spieth has any serious intentions at Augusta he’s going to need to come out of his slump right now. But 18/1 seems a little short for a player who, however classy, hasn’t been able to put four complete rounds together.
Rickie Fowler’s claims are obvious and there will be plenty ready to take the double figure price on him, while, at 40/1, Abraham Ancer could continue the excellent golf he’s shown in the last couple of weeks.
