Mauritius Open betting tips and preview

The European Tour heads to the exotic Indian Ocean island this week. Our tipster Keel Timmins previews the action

At a bigger price, recent Challenge Tour graduate Jack Singh Brar (80/1, 6 places) catches the eye.

The 22-year-old won his first event on the second circuit two months ago in France, and given his successful amateur career – which culminated in an impressive Walker Cup appearance last year – he looks to hold all the ingredients to become a force at this level.

Brar made his debut as a European Tour card holder last week, finishing 30th in Hong Kong while putting on an excellent display of ball striking; only a cold putter let him down.

He’s been playing some really solid golf over the last couple of months and this low-grade event could be an ideal opportunity for him to strike.

Elsewhere, I’m keen to explore the idea that this course may hold many parallels with the Verdura Golf Resort – venue of the Rocco Forte Sicilian Open.

The two layouts play host to weak European Tour events, they each have wide fairways and they’re both coastal layouts where wind can play a serious factor.

Alvaro Quiros

Alvaro Quiros (80/1, 7 places) won that event in Sicily last year, and the Spaniard was in contention last week in Hong Kong before a third round 74 took him out of the running. His other three rounds produced scores of  68-66-69, so he’s clearly playing some nice stuff; as a result, this proven winner looks worth chancing at 80s.

Zander Lombard (100/1, 6 places) was the runner-up to Quiros in 2017, and again, the South African is another big hitter who is more than capable of playing in windy conditions – evidenced by his runner-up finish at The Amateur Championship four years ago, and more recently he fired an opening 67 to be near the top of the leaderboard at The Open around Carnoustie.

Finally, Yikeun Chang (150/1, 6 places) could be worth some loose change as he looks to emulate his compatriot Jeung-Hun Wang in winning on this course.

The Korean is a two-time winner on the Korean circuit, made the cut at last year’s Open at Birkdale and drove the ball beautifully in Hong Kong last week on his way to a top-20 finish.
