Kenya Open: Staking plan
Kalle Samooja – 2pts e/w @ 22/1 with Bet365
Despite an underwhelming weekend, I am unapologetically selecting Samooja for a second week in a row. This is another track that should really suit his game, as he already has a 6th place finish here in 2019. In Qatar, Samooja roared to a 65 in round one before stalling in tricky conditions to card a 78 in round three. His 4th place finish at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic is still fresh in the memory, as is his runner-up finish in Cyprus last November, so he certainly has more than enough quality to take an event of this nature. I can see him shaking off the disappointment of last week, and at this price he certainly represents value.
Chris Paisley – 2pts e/w @ 30/1 with Bet365
Another player getting a second selection in as many weeks is Paisley. The Englishman had a very productive weekend, securing a T7 finish in Qatar. Paisley has hit a solid run of form recently, with two 7th place finishes in his last four events. In Qatar, Paisley ranked 7th for SG: Approach and 14th for SG: Around-the-green, both of which will be important in order to access the small greens at this course. His price is appealing again, especially in a field without many of the European Tour’s elite, so I am going to give Paisley another shot this week.
Jamie Donaldson 2pts e/w @ 33/1 with Bet365
Donaldson very nearly made my selection sheet last week in Qatar, and after a solid T5 finish, I cannot leave him out for this. The Welshman had a great end to the 2020 season, finishing runner-up in South Africa and 3rd in Cyprus among a number of other impressive efforts. The start of the 2021 season has been slow for Donaldson, but he moved in the right direction in Qatar last week and that performance may well spark him into life again. In that event, he ranked 11th for Driving Accuracy, 13th for SG: Tee-to-green and 25th for Scrambling, again indicating a return to the form of last season. As an experienced European Tour winner, he has more than enough quality to take this event.
Joachim B Hansen – 1pt e/w @ 50/1 with Bet365
A fast start in Qatar put Hansen in contention, and he followed up with two impressive rounds in very tricky conditions. Sunday didn’t really go to plan for him, but there was enough evidence over the first three days to suggest he isn’t far away from a second European Tour win. Hansen ranked 11th for SG: Tee-to-green, 6th for SG: Approach and 14th for Scrambling, demonstrating he fits the profile of previous winners here. His form at the end of last season was strong, winning in South Africa and finishing 7th at Wentworth, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see him go close again this week.
