There is no shortage of wedge options, with sleek tour-style models dominating the market. But for many golfers, bladed wedges are simply too punishing especially on off-centred strikes. Cleveland have recognised this gap and designed the CBZ wedge to provide all the spin and feel of a specialist wedge while building in much-needed forgiveness. Let’s take a look at the result in our full review of the Cleveland CBZ wedge…

NCG SUMMARY

The Cleveland CBZ wedge fills a gap in the market that many brands overlook. It offers the shape and spin performance of a specialist wedge but with forgiveness built in for the everyday golfer. If you have ever struggled with the unforgiving nature of a bladed wedge but do not want to settle for the chunky look of a set wedge, this could be the answer.

PROS

  • Excellent forgiveness
  • Premium feel
  • Tour-inspired look
  • Impressive spin from all lies

CONS

  • Fewer bounce and grind choices compared to tour wedges

First Impressions

Cleveland have carved out a strong reputation in the wedge market, and the CBZ continues that tradition. At address, I think it looks every bit like a tour-style wedge. It is sleek, compact, confidence-inspiring, but hidden inside is plenty of help. That balance of aesthetics and forgiveness is where the CBZ stands out for me.

NCG Review

On the course, I found the CBZ to be significantly more forgiving than a bladed wedge. Shots struck from the heel and toe retain both spin and distance far better than expected. Spin levels are excellent thanks to the aggressive face milling, and full shots travel slightly further than with a traditional wedge, which gives you some built-in power.

Cleveland CBZ Wedge

What stood out to me most was how well Cleveland has hidden the forgiving nature of this wedge. When you set the CBZ down behind the ball, it looks exactly like a blade. When you strike it, it performs like a cavity-back. I think this combination makes it a compelling option for mid-handicap golfers who want that premium performance without the punishment of a pure tour design.

Cleveland has also included much of the same technology that you find in their tour-proven RTX models. The proprietary alloy used in the CBZ is 25 percent softer, which provides more control and better feel. A Gelback TPU insert sits directly behind the sweet spot to dampen vibration and improve feedback. The HydroZip face, which uses a combination of dynamic blasting and laser milling, increases surface roughness and creates more friction between the ball and the clubface. This delivers impressive spin while also helping the club to perform when grass or debris gets caught between the ball and the face.

To add forgiveness, Cleveland have redistributed weight from the heel and hosel into the centre of the clubface, which increases stability and boosts MOI. The CBZ is also offered in three sole shapes—V, S, and C—depending on loft, which allows players to choose an option that suits their style. Each wedge comes fitted with a premium KBS shaft as standard.

Cleveland CBZ Wedge

Overall, I think Cleveland has successfully delivered a forgiving wedge that does not sacrifice looks or feel. The CBZ is easy to launch, generates huge amounts of spin, and feels soft off the face. For golfers who want the appearance of a blade with the forgiveness of a cavity-back, this wedge is an excellent choice.

    About the author

    Callaway Epic Max driver review
    Jack Backhouse

A member of the PGA for 13 years, Jack has lived golf for more than half his life. Inspired by Tiger Wood’s winning putt at the 2008 US Open, an obsession began with watching slow motion golf swings on the internet and reading What’s In The Bag articles in magazines.

Not destined for a life behind the desk in a pro shop, Jack has focussed more on coaching, working closely with regional teams in North Yorkshire and helping golfers of all levels on their journey to enjoying playing the game more. Jack has coached many junior golfers into the county teams, and once worked with a player at the 2018 Open Championship at Carnoustie.

After letting his game fall apart prior to COVID, Jack rediscovered his love for playing golf after joining Silloth Golf Club in 2020 and whipping round the windy, firm links course. Playing regularly with a half set of clubs he has a passion for shot making and developing skill, and claims to have the sharpest 30-100 yard game in the North of England (only because he doesn’t know anyone in the South), and now maintains a +1 handicap at a club much closer to home, Sand Moor GC.

Jack has always tinkered with his equipment, once building his own Frankenstein one length set of clubs after watching Bryson DeChambeau burst onto the scene after winning the US Amateur. He firmly believes in getting custom fit and is happy to debate anyone about blade irons being superior to any other iron category.

Jack loves: playing quickly, 2 ball golf, match play, heathland courses, pencil bags, foursomes, Tiger Wood’s swing 2005-2009.

Jack hates: buggies, unnecessary trees, giving shots, the 7 iron loft debate, graphite shaft lovers weird superiority complex.
