4.5 star review
NCG SUMMARY

Wilson are at it again with an updated 4 piece ball that will give you more distance than the 2023 model. The ball has a better print

A new addition to Wilson’s premium golf ball lineup, the Staff Model X is a four-piece ball looking for more spin, more height and more control with their shots.

PROS

  • Love the old-school logo and text
  • Great ball speed from driver
  • Feels good on short shots around the green

CONS

  • Not as much ball spin with irons and wedges as The Wilson Staff Model X ball

Wilson Staff Model Golf Ball 2024 Review: First Impressions

Right out of the gate, the new Wilson Staff Model golf ball is an improvement from last year with the logo changing to the old style text, the Wilson logo instead off the Staff logo. I liked the Staff Model ball a lot last year and thought its high performance went largely unnoticed in a world where people either stick with the same ball out of habit or just play whatever random balls they find.

NCG Verdict

Golf balls are a hugely undervalued part of a golfers kit bag. Brands spend millions of dollars on R&D to produce balls that will compress enough at your swing speed, to give you the optimal speed, launch and spin to get the ball close to the hole. In 2024 Wilson have moved to a 2 tour ball offering, with the Staff Model X flying higher with more spin and the Staff Model more for players who already generate plenty of spin, and require some help keeping the ball in the perfect window.

On the 50-yard pitch shot that starts our ball test, my shots were coming out low and fiery. I was pleased to see some shots recording up to 8000rpm of backspin which is more than enough to throw the ball at the flag and expect it to stop. I didn’t quite achieve as much spin as I could with the Staff Model X ball, but the slightly softer compression means this ball just won’t spin as much on shorter shots.

alignment aid

The new Staff Model ball has a lot of similar characteristics to last year’s ball but has an adapted inner mantle layer and advanced V-COR™ performance technology, which optimises iron spin from the fairways.

Moving onto the 7-iron portion of the test, I love how consistent the spin rate is on the shots I hit. Spin is control, and although yes, you want perfect numbers, consistent numbers are probably more useful to a player and will lead to better approach shots into the green. The ball was launching high enough with a great decent angle, which would give me adequate stopping power on the greens.

ball data

The driver numbers, too, were pretty pleasing. I averaged about half a mile per hour faster with this ball than the Wilson Staff Model X ball, and although I didn’t strike the ball that great with the test, I am relatively happy with the 274 yards average total.

As expected, around and on the greens, the ball felt great, similar to other popular tour golf balls. I really like how the logo with the old-style text looks on the ball, and the line alignment aid is spot on for golfers who choose to line the ball up on the green.

I believe this is a good ball, and because of its value, it could absolutely attract some players who want that tour ball feel and spin but don’t want to pay the TP5 or Pro V1 prices. I am more likely to lean towards the Staff Model X ball as it gives me more of what I want out of a ball, but the Wilson Staff Model will make a lot of golfers happy in 2024.

About the author

Callaway Epic Max driver review
Jack Backhouse

A member of the PGA for 13 years, Jack has lived golf for more than half his life. Inspired by Tiger Wood’s winning putt at the 2008 US Open, an obsession began with watching slow motion golf swings on the internet and reading What’s In The Bag articles in magazines.

Not destined for a life behind the desk in a pro shop, Jack has focussed more on coaching, working closely with regional teams in North Yorkshire and helping golfers of all levels on their journey to enjoying playing the game more. Jack has coached many junior golfers into the county teams, and once worked with a player at the 2018 Open Championship at Carnoustie.

After letting his game fall apart prior to COVID, Jack rediscovered his love for playing golf after joining Silloth Golf Club in 2020 and whipping round the windy, firm links course. Playing regularly with a half set of clubs he has a passion for shot making and developing skill, and claims to have the sharpest 30-100 yard game in the North of England (only because he doesn’t know anyone in the South), and now maintains a +1 handicap at a club much closer to home, Sand Moor GC.

Jack has always tinkered with his equipment, once building his own Frankenstein one length set of clubs after watching Bryson DeChambeau burst onto the scene after winning the US Amateur. He firmly believes in getting custom fit and is happy to debate anyone about blade irons being superior to any other iron category.

Jack loves: playing quickly, 2 ball golf, match play, heathland courses, pencil bags, foursomes, Tiger Wood’s swing 2005-2009.

Jack hates: buggies, unnecessary trees, giving shots, the 7 iron loft debate, graphite shaft lovers weird superiority complex.
