NCG SUMMARY

Marketed as a tour-level golf ball with a softer feel, the Chrome Soft is tailored towards players with swing speeds in the 90–105 mph range who desire quality and control. It delivers fantastic control around the greens and when hitting into them.

Excellent levels of spin, a super feel and a confidence-inspiring control make this a joy to use. Although, the ball isn’t the longest off the tee it still delivers a premium level of performance across the course.

PROS

  • Fantastic feel – very responsive around the greens
  • Plenty of loft for attacking the pins
  • Controlled ball flight with the driver

Callaway Chrome Soft Golf Ball Review: First Impressions

There hasn’t been much visual change to the Callaway Chrome Soft golf ball, this is still the golf ball you have loved for the last few years. The red numbers and crisp white paint job really give it a premium look and feel even before you hit.

NCG Verdict

Like all the previous Callaway Chrome Soft golf balls, this latest generation is aimed at the aspirational club golfer who is looking for a tour-level golf ball. It still has all the premium technology as in the tour designed models but is crafted for golfers with a slightly softer swing speed.

For me, this has been a golf ball I have been staunchly behind for a while now. A slight reservation I did have over the model from a few years ago was that it felt a little too soft at times but Callaway has certainly rectified that now.

Off the putter and wedge face the ball felt great. The ball provides a solid yet plush sensation, making it a great option for short-game precision.

One of the standout features of the Chrome Soft is its high-performance urethane cover, which is the same as that used on the Chrome Tour, Chrome Tour X, and Chrome Tour Triple Diamond. This ensures a tour-quality experience around the greens, offering excellent spin, superb feel, and confidence-inspiring control.

Performance off the irons is another area where the Chrome Soft excels. Data from my testing, as seen below, shows that with a seven iron, the ball produces a launch angle of approximately 22–23 degrees and a spin rate of around 5,500 rpm.

While the spin might be slightly lower than some competitors, the ball maintained plenty of stopping power due to the steep descent angle. This was key for me to be able to hold greens effectively. It will give players plenty of confidence when attacking pins.

With the driver, the Chrome Soft continued to deliver solid results. Whilst I didn’t find it the fastest in terms of ball speed, it provided consistent performance. Spin levels are slightly on the high side, which may not be fully optimal for all players, but the trade-off is a controlled and predictable flight. This maybe due to the seamless cover design and the advanced dimple pattern which work to help maintain stability and accuracy off the tee.

Overall, the Callaway Chrome Soft is an outstanding option for players who prioritize feel, control, and consistency. It may not be the longest ball off the tee, but its reliable greenside spin and high-quality construction make it a top choice. If you’re willing to pay a premium for performance, the Chrome Soft won’t disappoint.
