Iām not saying I was there at the very start,Ā and I canāt honestly remember my first pair,Ā but I have been wearing and reviewing Ecco shoes since 2002.Ā
Iāve been lucky enough to visit Eccoās Danish headquartersĀ on two occasions ā even making what I can only describe as a ham-fisted attempt to manufacture my own pair of Eccos when I was let loose with a sewing machine.Ā
In those days, the shoe we dreamed of was the World Class, withĀ itsĀ leather solesĀ and shiny uppers. I still have a new pair that I won in a media day, in their original box, and in individual shoeĀ bags.Ā In a rich, golden brown, they were ā and still are ā too smart to wear on a golf course. The leather smells as good now as it did then.Ā

Of course, EccoĀ as a brandĀ was to travel in a different direction from World Class, which was all about establishing the brand as serious players in golf.
Eccoās heritage in street shoes is all about comfort, practicality, reliability and durability.Ā
The golf range has a nod to that but is also edgy,Ā futuristic, pioneering and super-premium.Ā
I rememberĀ onceĀ being told aĀ statistic along the lines that over 85% of all golf shoes in the UKĀ wereĀ sold at under Ā£100, and at that stageĀ the cheapest pair ofĀ EccosĀ you could buyĀ was around Ā£115.Ā Iām paraphrasing but the point still stands. This is not a brand seeking to dominate on volume.Ā
Rather, in golf, itās all about performance and innovation.Ā
The breakthrough came withĀ theĀ Ecco Streets, and Fred Couples at the 2010 Masters. Itās a story well told, but,Ā looking back,Ā itās hard to believe how revolutionary the concept was of a shoe without spikes that you could wear on and off the course.Ā It seems so normal now but that certainly wasnāt the case as recently as 10 years ago.Ā

Thereās no doubt that Eccoās hybrid shoes have come a long way sinceĀ those days.Ā
