Could this be the biggest disrupter we have seen in golf equipment for quite some time?

McLaren has announced the creation of their latest venture; McLaren Golf. As part of their introduction to the sport they have also unveiled their debut irons.

There has been rumblings of McLaren entering the golf space for quite some time now. Best known for their dominance in motorsport and cutting-edge automotive engineering, McLaren is now applying that same performance-driven mindset to golf.

Major champion and the number five golfer in the world Justin Rose is one of a number of professional golfers, alongside Michelle Wie West and Ian Poulter, who are investors and ambassadors of the brand.

Quite the show of faith. So, what makes them so appealing to the 2013 US Open champion and co? Find out here…

The technology

Given their background, and after years of development, it’s perhaps no surprise that McLaren has used advanced manufacturing techniques that are more commonly associated with motorsport than golf.

One of these processes is Metal Injection Molding (MIM) which is a feature of both sets of irons. This is a specialist manufacturing process rarely used at scale in golf.

McLaren believes it offers unprecedented control over material composition, internal geometry and weight distribution.

That level of precision allows engineers to fine-tune performance characteristics throughout the set, from centre of gravity positioning to moment of inertia. This is far greater freedom than what traditional forging or casting methods allow.

Series 1 – A modern tour blade

The Series 1 irons are aimed squarely at elite ball strikers, but with a modern rethink of what a blade can offer.

Typically we associate blade irons with a lack of forgiveness and McLaren is trying to challenge that view.

Co-developed with Justin Rose, the compact, muscle-back profile is paired with internal weighting and proprietary metal blends designed to enhance stability and consistency.

Additionally, this is enhanced without sacrificing the workability better players demand.

A tungsten weight system and McLaren’s Structural Mesh technology help redistribute mass for improved forgiveness, while maintaining a traditional look at address.

McLaren believes that all this contributes to a blade that promises added playability alongside tour-level control.

Series 3 – A players distance irons

For those seeking more power, the Series 3 irons are McLaren Golf’s players distance offering, but with a distinct twist.

Built on the same MIM framework, the head combines internal weighting with carbon fibre elements to optimise launch conditions and stability. Speed is also the beneficiary of this inclusion.

A carbon-fibre bonnet is not only an aesthetic nod to their automotive heritage, but also plays a role in vibration dampening and feel.

The sole design is another standout feature. It has a heel cut and refined camber engineered to improve turf interaction and maintain speed through impact, even on imperfect strikes.

As is the case with the Series 1 blade irons, the McLaren Structural Mesh is also a key component here. It redistributes weight away from parts of the clubhead that isn’t necessary to performance in order to increase the stability and forgiveness.

Blended Set options

Like other brands, for example Srixon and Titleist, the options provided can be blended. Justin Rose in his press conference this week hinted he might play the Series 3 iron, or irons, at the top of his bag and then move into the Series 1 irons in his lower irons.

This is not unusual – Srixon players often choose the ZXi5’s for longer irons and the ZXi7’s for shorter irons.

This is all about getting forgiveness in the long irons and control with the scoring irons. Only time will tell if McLaren Golf irons provide this combination effectively or not.

The details

Available: From April 30, 2026

RRP: £360 / $375 per iron

About the author

Max Mcvittie

A bit of a late bloomer to the game of golf, Max fell in love with the sport when he attended Saturday coaching sessions down at his local golf club after being inspired by friends and family members.

Max has remained a member of Eden Golf Club in Carlisle for a number of years now as he looks to get his handicap down into single figures. Most of his golfing career has been spent battling a permanent slice off the tee, which has led to some ugly rounds.

Having studied at the University of Sunderland, Max is starting out his dream career in sports journalism. During his time at university, he picked up valuable work experience at Reach PLC, BBC Radio Cumbria and GiveMeSport, whilst also getting work published in the Teesside Live. He also spent time working at a local weekly newspaper, Eskdale and Liddesdale Advertiser, as a general news reporter partially covering some local sport just north of the border in Langholm.

Max has just started his journey with the NCG working as the assistant equipment editor. He looks forwarded to reviewing the latest golf equipment, taking up an interest in reviews when buying his first golf club, a Cleveland RTX wedge.

With his bag not going under too many changes throughout the last few years, Max carries an M3 driver, Titleist GT3 Fairway Wood, M2 hybrid, a set of M2 irons, Callaway Jaws wedges and a TaylorMade Spider putter. And yes, Max is a bit of a self-proclaimed TaylorMade fan boy.
