Looking to update your winter wardrobe? Jonathan Taylor has put the FootJoy Thermoseries Hybrid Vest to the test

FootJoy Thermoseries Hybrid Vest review

FootJoy’s latest apparel range, The Thermoseries, is designed to be layered in colder conditions. Here we review the essential insulating layer that FootJoy call a vest.

NCG SUMMARY

This is such a useful and flexible part of a layering system. The Thermoseries Hybrid vest is suitable for most conditions, thanks to moisture-wicking materiality and a not too thick, not too thin jacquard knit fabrication.

PROS

  • Close fitting.
  • Works well as part of a layering system.
  • Premium feel.

CONS

  • High collar is a distraction.

FootJoy Thermoseries Hybrid Vest review: First Impressions

A crucial component of an outdoor layering system is the insulating layer. For the golfer this will typically be a sleeved mid-layer but the gilet or vest (or body warmer) has proved to be an increasingly useful and popular layering option because it can provide warmth without restricting a golf swing. I was interested to test out the new offering from FootJoy, which forms part of their newly introduced Thermoseries layering collection.

FootJoy Thermoseries Hybrid Vest review

This garment is available in two colours; navy and grey. I tested the light grey version. It features a full zip with a sturdy rubber puller and a pair of open hand pockets.

There is an insulated (not too thick, not too thin) body with a knitted centre stretch panel at the back for mobility. A couple of FootJoy motifs adorn the left collar and upper back. There is also a subtle snowflake logo just beneath the left pocket which reminds us that it is part of the Thermoseries family.

The shell has an understated Jacquard hexagonal pattern with a soft feel. The overall appearance is not particularly striking but is smart and neat with durable construction.

FootJoy Thermoseries Hybrid Vest review: On The Course

I’m about 173 cm tall and weigh 74 kg with an average (ie non-athletic) shape. The medium size fitted really well. There was a sense of snugness but absolutely no restriction of movement.

The level of insulation and lack of bulk meant that I could comfortably wear this over a base layer and thin mid layer, and still put an outer waterproof jacket on if required. I felt that this was a real ‘plus’ point as other similar items in my wardrobe lack the versatility of this garment.

For me, there were a couple of minor issues. I found that the collar could be a distraction during a swing unless the vest was zipped entirely up.

I also wasn’t convinced by the pockets. Because they have no zip, they are only really useful for housing a tee that you don’t mind losing or for warming your hands. I also felt that the open pocket construction detracted from the lines of the vest in that the pockets tended to hang open.

FootJoy Thermoseries Hybrid Vest review: The 19th hole

Although there is nothing particularly striking about this garment at first glance, I found myself growing to appreciate it. And this is because it is such a useful and flexible part of a layering system. And, for that reason alone, I can see this becoming a staple member of my cooler-weather golfing wardrobe.

The grey colour contrasts nicely with a darker mid layer or trouser but, as I invariably carry my golf bag, I might prefer the navy option as it would probably spend less time in the washing machine.

Although I don’t regard this as something I’ll wear for other outdoor activities due to the lack of zippered pockets, I think it will get plenty of use on the golf course and even around the house.
