FootJoy Thermoseries Base-Layer review

Looking to update your winter wardrobe? Jonathan Taylor has put the FootJoy Thermoseries Base-Layer to the test

FootJoy’s latest apparel range, The Thermoseries, is designed to be layered in colder conditions. Here we review the essential component of any layering system; the humble base layer.

FootJoy Thermoseries Base-Layer review: First Impressions

As the proud owner of a variety of base layers used for golf, skiing and other cool/cold weather activities, I was interested to test out the new offering from FootJoy, which forms part of their newly introduced Thermoseries layering collection.

This garment is currently available in just on colour, a rather striking crisp white. It features a round collar, raglan sleeve construction (for ease of movement) and ‘FJ’ motifs on the left wrist and the top of the back. There is also a subtle snowflake logo on the lower left side of the garment which reminds us that it is part of the Thermoseries family. It has a very appealing soft feel and appearance.

FootJoy Thermoseries Base-Layer review: On The Course

I’m about 173 cm tall and weigh 74 kg with an average (ie non-athletic) shape. The medium size fitted well and was particularly comfortable to wear with no irritation from the fabric or chafing from the lock stitch seams.

I felt that the neck could do with having a slightly higher rise, to improve heat retention. I also wondered whether the body was a little on the short side. I like a base layer that stays well and truly tucked in.

The so-called ‘golf compression fit’ gave no great sense of compression but I did feel a sense of freedom of movement on the course and I didn’t feel unduly restricted in the golf swing as can occur with some base layers.

Breathability was excellent due to the wicking properties of the hexagonal pattern Jacquard polyester weave and so there was no sense of stickiness from moisture build-up. It was comfortable to wear beneath the Thermoseries hybrid midlayer or, as shown here, beneath the Thermoseries vest.

FootJoy Thermoseries Base-Layer review: The 19th hole

So where does this fit in my pretty extensive stable of similar gear? I have to say that this is as comfortable a base layer as I have experienced. I was in no rush to remove it after the round. Although I don’t think this would be my first choice for a cold day on a windy links course, or an Alpine ski trip, this is a piece of clothing that I have been reaching for as the weather has cooled off, whether or not my activities for the day include golf.

It’s already been washed a few times (with like coloured garments) with no issues and it doesn’t need ironing.
