Thank you Padel! Testing waterproof golf gear is now fun but beneficial when it comes to assessing performance benefits.

Yes, hands up, I am one of those annoying new breed of people – the Padel enthusiast who loves telling people how good the game is and spreading the gospel of what is probably the fasting growing sport in the UK. What I didn’t expect to be a spinoff benefit of the game was that it has enabled me to test waterproof golf gear in a whole new way.

I play most my Padel at an outdoor facility in Wetherby with a regular slot being 7pm on a Sunday – so you are well and truly exposed to the elements and a great chance to blow off the cobwebs from any weekend socialising! Though more enjoyable playing in the summer it is still possible to play during the winter in the rain and wind. I suppose somewhat similar to golf – if you have the correct kit, it definitely helps in your battle against the elements.

This is when it dawned on me, what a perfect opportunity to put waterproof golf apparel through its paces – not on the golf course but on the Padel court! One of the main reasons this appealed to me was that, to be honest, if it is pouring with rain I am more than likely not going to venture out on the golf course. Yes, I could test the kit with a hose pipe but it doesn’t really help with knowing how it feels when moving around.

Bingo! Padel 7pm on a Sunday presented the perfect opportunity. I now find myself hoping for rain so I can put another item to the test! I have been totally surprised on how items have performed. This has provided me with a new lense to view waterproof golf items. Items I thought before have little use, or really didn’t appreciate their performance benefits, I now absolutely love and respect!

Below are 3 items that I can totally recommend when it comes to passing the waterproof test. More items will be added as and when they are re-tested on the Padel court.

Waterproof Golf Gear – Top picks

Adidas Hydrochromic Camo Bucket Hat

5 star review

I had already reviewed this item on the golf course and was suitably impressed with this bucket hat. As I’m approaching 50 items such as this seem to suit my present day mid life needs – both on and off the course.

Off the course, it’s great for rainy days, stopping rain from dripping into my glasses while watching the kids from the sporting touchline.

It also excelled on the rainy Padel Court – extremely comfortable and light. I hardly knew I had it on my head but it was definitely doing its job of keeping the rain out of my face.

On the golf course, it really helps keep rain out of my eyes amid those unexpected showers. The soft, waterproof, lightweight material is undoubtedly comfortable and breathable, perfect for use in both the winter and summer months.

The one-size-fits-all design with a simple velcro fastener makes it easy to adjust for a snug fit – it comes highly recommended if you are in the market for a bucket hat – be it for golf, dog walking or any other outdoor activity.

PROS

  • Easy to adjust
  • Waterproof
  • All round year usage
  • Versatile – useful on the off the course

CONS

  • None

Puma Helsinki Golf Shoes

5 star review

The Puma Helsinki Golf Shoe offers a stylish, trainer-inspired look that appeals to those seeking versatility and modernity. Designed mainly for summer, they feature lightweight, breathable materials, and a comfortable fit – even for my wider feet.

The grip and stability are suitable on various terrains, making them ideal on and off course everyday wear.

When it came to the Padel court I decided to test these on a day where it started to rain at 3pm and didn’t stop for the rest of the day. This meant come 7pm it was perfect conditions to test the Helsinki’s grip and waterproof capabilities. Once again, they passed with flying colours! Unbelievably comfortable, great grip and kept my feet dry.

While they might not be a go to pair for muddy wet winters, they excel in warm weather and would have no problems coping if you did get caught in a down pour. The casual design may not suit traditionalists, but for those wanting a relaxed, sporty look, these shoes provide comfort, style, and practicality.

Pros:

  • Very comfortable
  • Versatile – can easily be worn on and off the golf course
  • Great summer option – no issues with grip and support
  • Waterproof – this surprised me, but they definitely are!

Cons:

  • Not an all the year round golf shoe if you play golf on muddy courses in the winter
  • Looks not for everyone

Peter Millar Shield Half-Zip Rain Shell

National Club Golfer and National Club Golfer magazine

Having recently worn the Hyperlight Shield Half-Zip it has quickly become another one of my favourite Peter Millar pieces.

The quality is obvious – the fabric feels lightweight yet sturdy, and it kept me completely dry in a sudden rain shower.

The stretch made it easy to move, and it was surprisingly warm for its weight. I also appreciated how easy it was to pack away in the included pouch, making it perfect for unpredictable weather.

On a rainy Padel court it truly excelled. Especially compared to the items my fellow Padel players were wearing. They had ‘waterproof’ jackets on but were soaked. The rain just seemed to bounce off me and so not only left my polo underneath dry but pretty much the item itself. It really did highlight for me the quality and why a premium price is fully justified.

The only small drawback is that if I put heavier items like keys or a wallet in the pockets, the inner lining drops down and becomes visible, which is a bit of an issue when off the course.

Overall, this is a high-quality, reliable piece that performs well in tough weather. It’s perfect for staying protected while still feeling comfortable and flexible.

PROS

  • High quality
  • Waterproof
  • Packaway pouch included

CONS

  • Inner lining drops when heavy items placed in the pockets

RRP: £195

Sizes: XL

Colours: Navy

Waterproof Golf Gear – Top picks

In the end, my Padel experience of playing in the rain has truly reshaped how I see waterproof golf gear. Not only has it become a fun challenge, but a practical testing ground for golf apparel!

From hats to shoes, I’ve discovered that quality waterproof gear enhances comfort and performance, even outside the golf course. It’s amazing how a sport like Padel can open new perspectives on existing equipment. That is why I am looking forward to testing more items and updating this page.

So, whether you’re braving the elements on the court or the course, investing in reliable waterproof gear is a game-changer. Embrace the rain, and marvel at the quality of your waterproof golf gear!
