It’s that time of the year again when the temperatures begin to rise and the golf season gets into full swing. With it comes a change in golf clothes, as the waterproofs can go back in the drawer for the time being – so we hope!

To help take advantage of the warmer months this year, take a look at some of Zero Restriction’s best bits of spring and summer golf wear.

Zero Restriction (or ZR) is an American brand that was actually established back in 1991, by an individual in a rural Pennsylvanian barn. He worked in the ski industry and was frustrated with the fabrics available to golfers. Raingear guaranteed for life that allowed you to swing a club without restriction was created, and the competitive advantage was recognized by players on the professional tours. ZR was worn by Payne Stewart on his way to victory in the 1999 US Open, by Team USA in the Solheim Cup since 2015, and by the US President’s Cup team in 2019.

Here at NCG we have found they are a brand that has a knack of delivering technical, performance-driven bits of clothing designed to handle everything from cool spring mornings to warm summer afternoons – this is reflected in the price but you are definitely getting premium quality across the Zero Restriction range.

So, which pieces stand out?

Here’s a closer look at some men’s and women’s golf wear and why they deserve a place in your wardrobe…

The Duran Vest is a lightweight vest and is my first introduction to ZR. It is constructed from 80% polyester and 20% spandex and is designed to be stretchy, lightweight and versatile. It looks and feels very well put together.

I tested the version in Navy, one of three cool colours. There is a contrasting light blue placket with four button closures. I thought this was a novel alternative to the usual zip closure and I liked it. There are two open side pockets with mesh lining There is a small ZERO logo to the right chest and a motif at the back of the collar. It comes in five sizes. The medium fitted my medium build comfortably, so I’d say runs true to size.

The fit is relaxed and yet smart. On the course I am pleased to report that the ZR Duran allowed unrestricted swinging, so it’s true to the name. I found it to be an excellent layering piece. I have worn it just over a polo, and also as a third layer. It’s also easy to put a waterproof over the top. Although it is lightweight, I’d say it offers decent warmth to weight.

All in all, this is an excellent product that looks the part and I think will get plenty of wear in the coming season. It comes highly recommended.

PROS

  • Great choice of colours.
  • Flexible use.
  • Quality construction.

CONS

  • Zippered pockets would be nice.

RRP: £134.00 / $175

Sizes:  S-2XL

Colours: Navy, Astro and Monterey

Zero Restriction Hearns Pullover

The Hearns Pullover is the long-sleeved version of the excellent Duran Vest (above). It is constructed from 80% polyester and 20% spandex and is designed to be stretchy, lightweight and versatile. I tested the version in Dodger Blue (a striking light blue), one of three colours. There is a contrasting bright green placket with four button closures. This is a novel alternative to the usual zippered closure and I rather like it. There are two open side pockets with a mesh lining. I’m not sure I’d use them for anything, but they are unobtrusive.  There is ‘ZERO’ lettering to the right chest and a motif on the back collar. This modest branding means that the Hearns is suitable for a range of non-golfing activities.

On the course, the Hearns did indeed offer Zero Restriction when playing. Although it doesn’t look particularly stowable away in a golf bag, it is a remarkably flexible layering piece. I have worn it as a second or third layer, including in combination with the Duran vest. It is also straightforward to layer a waterproof over the top. Although it is light in weight, it does offer good warmth to weight ratio, and the soft brushed finish offers excellent next to the skin comfort.

So, I have been really impressed by my introduction to the ZR brand, both with the Hearns and also the Duran Vest. I anticipate these getting lots of use in the changeable weather that we experience as golfers in the UK.

It is highly recommended.

PROS

  • Quality construction.
  • Strong colour choice.
  • Flexible use, on and off course.

CONS

  • A little bulky to stow away.

RRP: £159.00 / $208
Sizes: Sm-2XL
Colours: Black, Navy and Dodger Blue

This sleeveless polo has a colourway that screams summer. Its stretchy feel is thanks to a mixture of spandex and nylon. It’s lightweight and easy to wear,

I have a small in this top which is my standard size and i really like the fit.

It’s a prime choice for summer with UPF+ 50 protection with a cooling feel as well as offering a nice sleeveless shaping.

PROS

  • Nice fit and shaping
  • Stretchy material
  • Upf+ 50 sun protection

CONS

  • Premium price

Zero Restriction Sadie Skort

This skort gives summer with its bold and colourful design. It has an elasticated waist band that has a decent width, so it doesn’t roll over. Grip tape is a great addition to the shorts to keep them from moving during your round, grippy enough with digging in. Pockets are on the front of the skort as well as being built into the shorts.

In terms of fit I’m 5ft 9 and this is a 17” skort, which sat at a nice length. I wore a small which is my standard size, there was a little slack in the waistband so possibly could have sized down for a tighter fit.

Its stretchy make up is very comfortable and lightweight. It comes with UPF 50+ sun protection, so it really is a great garment for those sunny days.

Overall, a great skort for summer!

PROS

  • UPF 50+ sun protection
  • Comfortable fit
  • Grip tape keeps shorts in place

CONS

  • At the risk of repeating myself – premium price

RRP: £103.00 / $135

Colours:  Imperial and Storm

Zero Restriction Mel Zip Mock

This is a great lightweight quarter zip midlayer.

Its stylish blue colourway looks great with navy cuffs for extra detail. I wore this in a medium, I tend to be a UK8 in tops but don’t like golf midlayers to be too clingy or restrictive. I found that thiswas a great fit – very easy to swing in.

I did find that when I put this in my golf bag it did crease quite easily, it’s not stretchy sport material like some of these types of tops are.

Overall, I very much enjoyed wearing this midlayer and look forward to wearing it more.

PROS

  • Lightweight
  • Easy to swing in
  • Stylish

CONS

  • Creased easily

RRP: £122.00 / $160

Sizes: XS-XLG

Colours: Serenity, silver, storm and neptune

Max Mcvittie

A bit of a late bloomer to the game of golf, Max fell in love with the sport when he attended Saturday coaching sessions down at his local golf club after being inspired by friends and family members.

Max has remained a member of Eden Golf Club in Carlisle for a number of years now as he looks to get his handicap down into single figures. Most of his golfing career has been spent battling a permanent slice off the tee, which has led to some ugly rounds.

Having studied at the University of Sunderland, Max is starting out his dream career in sports journalism. During his time at university, he picked up valuable work experience at Reach PLC, BBC Radio Cumbria and GiveMeSport, whilst also getting work published in the Teesside Live. He also spent time working at a local weekly newspaper, Eskdale and Liddesdale Advertiser, as a general news reporter partially covering some local sport just north of the border in Langholm.

Max has just started his journey with the NCG working as the assistant equipment editor. He looks forwarded to reviewing the latest golf equipment, taking up an interest in reviews when buying his first golf club, a Cleveland RTX wedge.

With his bag not going under too many changes throughout the last few years, Max carries an M3 driver, Titleist GT3 Fairway Wood, M2 hybrid, a set of M2 irons, Callaway Jaws wedges and a TaylorMade Spider putter. And yes, Max is a bit of a self-proclaimed TaylorMade fan boy.
