Sunderland Climatec Winter Gloves

5 star review
Best Golf Rain Gloves 2023
Best Golf Rain Gloves 2023

MacWet are a sub-brand within Glenmuir/Sunderland. They’re renowned for their excellent gloves that are designed to make playing golf in the rain so much easier. This was my first time testing MacWet gloves and so I was looking forward to seeing how much they could help.

The Climatec gloves are unisex and are designed to provide warmth and comfort during those cooler months when it rains. On my hand they didn’t feel overally thick and so I wasn’t sure how much warmth they would provide when wet.

In terms of performance these were top notch and probably the go to gloves if you are looking for a pair of winter/rain gloves. Afterall, they are the gloves worn by Aaron Rai on Tour.

MacWet gloves don’t follow a conventional sizing guide with a numerical scale as a guide. I measured my hand and determined I was a 7.5 which is a medium on their chart and this fit snug but well.

PROS

  • Fits well
  • Added warmth
  • Trusted by tour pros such as Aaron Rai

CONS

  • Took a while to dry off after use

RRP: £30.00

Sizes: One Size

Colours: Black

Sunderland Colorado Midlayer

5 star review

I think this might be my favourite midlayer of the year. Having never worn Sunderland apparel before I was pleasantly surprised and am now a Sunderland convert!

For me, apparel is more about fit and feel than jazzy designs and big logoes. Bascically, if it fits (especially with trousers), I am a fan! This midlayer was true to size and so no need to size up or down.

That being said, this Colorado midlayer provides you with more than just a good fit. It provides good warmth, yet is lightweight, and does not restrict when swinging the golf club. There is a draw cord at the bottom if you wished to adjust the fit.

All in all, a great midlayer that comes highly recommend.

PROS

  • Lightweight
  • Provides good warmth
  • No restriction in the swing

CONS

  • None

RRP: £90.00

Sizes: S-XXXL

Colours: Charcoal/Black/Inferno, Navy/Red, Silver/Navy/White and Black/Gunmetal/Silver

Sunderland Atlas Hoodie

5 star review

I usually don’t go for hoodies, but I decided to give this one a try, and honestly, I’m glad I did. It’s surprisingly lightweight but keeps me warm — I was expecting something bulkier.

The fleece feels soft and comfy, and the stretch means I can move easily without feeling restricted. I wore it on a breezy morning at the golf course, and it handled the light rain well, thanks to the water-repellent finish.

The fit is sleek, and the hood stays put without being tight. I also liked the thermal cuffs and hem—they really help trap heat when it’s chilly.

Overall, I was impressed. It’s a simple, effective piece that I’ll actually wear, even as someone who usually skips hoodies.

PROS

  • Lightweight
  • Good stretch
  • Hood was not a distraction when swinging

CONS

  • None

RRP: £95.00

Sizes: S-XXXL

Colours: Charcoal/Black/Inferno, Navy/Silver Marl and Gunmetal Marl/Black

Sunderland Typhoon Jacket

5 star review

Probably the best value rain jacket on the market!

Sunderland have a mantra, #NEVERWEATHERBEATEN, and it’s written onto the inside pocket of this jacket. You can be as sceptical as you like, but I reckon I could wear this in a hurricane and still come out dry on the other side.

But the outer shell is very soft to the touch and remains so as you’re putting it on. This jacket moves with you, it doesn’t work against you.

The rain can’t permeate that layer however hard it falls. And believe me, I’ve seen it falling over the last couple of weeks. Gratefully, that liquid is not deflected either. It doesn’t run down off the jacket and onto your trousers as I’ve seen so many others do.

In fact, it’s so impressive you must remember to shake it off when you get into a drier space.

PROS

  • Light, airy and warm – but incredible at repelling water and superb in the wind
  • Soft feeling fabric is a major plus
  • PFC free
  • Sealed seams and, yes, a lifetime guarantee
  • Anti-snag Velcro cuff adjusters are worth their weight in gold

CONS

  • Nothing at all!

Sizes: S-3XL
Colours: Navy / Black / Navy-Red-White / Navy-Silver-White / Black-Gunmetal-White / Charcoal-Black-Inferno

About the author

Max Mcvittie

A bit of a late bloomer to the game of golf, Max fell in love with the sport when he attended Saturday coaching sessions down at his local golf club after being inspired by friends and family members.

Max has remained a member of Eden Golf Club in Carlisle for a number of years now as he looks to get his handicap down into single figures. Most of his golfing career has been spent battling a permanent slice off the tee, which has led to some ugly rounds.

Having studied at the University of Sunderland, Max is starting out his dream career in sports journalism. During his time at university, he picked up valuable work experience at Reach PLC, BBC Radio Cumbria and GiveMeSport, whilst also getting work published in the Teesside Live. He also spent time working at a local weekly newspaper, Eskdale and Liddesdale Advertiser, as a general news reporter partially covering some local sport just north of the border in Langholm.

Max has just started his journey with the NCG working as the assistant equipment editor. He looks forwarded to reviewing the latest golf equipment, taking up an interest in reviews when buying his first golf club, a Cleveland RTX wedge.

With his bag not going under too many changes throughout the last few years, Max carries an M3 driver, Titleist GT3 Fairway Wood, M2 hybrid, a set of M2 irons, Callaway Jaws wedges and a TaylorMade Spider putter. And yes, Max is a bit of a self-proclaimed TaylorMade fan boy.
