If you were building the perfect golf trip, Wales would tick an awful lot of boxes, at least that’s what the hosts of the NCG Top 100s Podcast believe.
Scotland is the home of golf. England is flooded with parkland, links and Open rota courses. And, the Republic of Ireland has an ungodly amount of natural links courses.
But, why is it Wales towers above them all as the place to be with the best value golf?
Top-class links golf? Check. Value for money? Plenty of it. Easily accessible road trip routes packed with great courses? Absolutely.
According to NCG Top 100s Podcast hosts Tom Irwin and Dan Murphy, Wales stands out not only for the quality and variety of its golf, but also for how affordable it is. Especially when compared to many other golfing hotspots across Britain and Ireland.

“It is worth touching on the value of golf in Wales, because I think it sort of stands out really as possibly the most affordable, affordable region, if you can call it a region, almost anywhere,” Irwin noted.
For a country that is smaller than New Jersey, it’s not short of championship and high calibre courses. Irwin pointed out that there are several venues on the NCG Top 100s Tour that are available to play for less than £100.
“Without trying too hard you can find lots and lots of different golf holidays in Wales and different bits of the country. To give you an idea of value, Tenby, Machynys, Ashburnham, and Pyle & Kenfig, are £100 or less as individual events (NCG Top 100s Tour).

“Now you might say £100 is a lot of money, but in top 100 green fee terms, that really is representing some exceptionally good value.”
“It’s absolutely exceptional, isn’t it?,” Murphy added.
“If you’re depending on which part of the country you’re in, there are some really nice clusters as well.

“One in the northwest corner of the country, then heading down the west coast, and then similarly there’s lots of golf along the M4 corridor in the south.
“So, there are a couple of very obvious trips that you can do without necessarily having to travel too far in between, and there is some unbelievable value.”
Style of course can be a big factor in where people book their golf trip. Murphy believes Welsh golf’s biggest strength lies in its diversity of this and the subsequent experiences on offer.
“The best golf courses in Wales undoubtedly are links with a smattering of cliff top,” he said.

“There’s obviously lots of parkland golf in Wales, as there is all over the world, it’s part of being the most common form of the game.
“The really cool, intriguing thing about Welsh golf would have to be its moorland courses.
“Obviously, the land in Wales is extraordinary, most of the interior of North Wales is Snowdonia National Park. So, it certainly creates some interesting geography and geology.
“There is some really interesting moorland golf for those who like that incredibly minimalist, naturalistic, rugged, simple style of the game.”
