As another British summer recedes from view, we golfers need something to keep our spirits up.

Planning future trips is just about the most effective remedy I know for an incoming winter – perhaps to a course you have only heard about or a resort that will make you want to book a return visit there and then.

That spirit of discovery sits at the heart of NCG Top 100s, and it runs right through this issue of the magazine. We have spent the last few months updating our list of Continental Europe’s finest golf resorts. The process has been led by my colleague and our in-house travel expert, Justine Board, and her latest resort ranking is undoubtedly the most comprehensive we have ever shared.

The debate, of course, is part of the fun. Everyone has a favourite and every golfer has their own idea of what makes a resort truly special. For some, it is championship pedigree. For others, it is the welcome, the setting, the food or simply the feeling that everything has been thought of and there is nowhere else you would rather be.

ALSO: Golf needs more short courses. And St Enodoc shows us why

Inside this issue, you will also find the remarkable tale of the day Rory McIlroy came to St Enodoc, accompanied by Shane Lowry and Luke Donald. What was supposed to be a quiet Friday fourball became one of those rare days that immediately enters a club’s folklore.

The story is told by the people who witnessed it. Rumours spread, preparations gathered pace and, before long, a Masters champion, a former Open champion and a Ryder Cup captain were walking up the famous 18th to applause from a crowd that could scarcely believe its luck.

Finally, we want to share a new way to explore the courses and resorts that we celebrate and obsess over. The NCG Top 100s app puts our rankings in your pocket, making it easier to browse the lists, plan future trips and keep track of the places you have played.

For those of us who are forever making mental notes about the next course, the next weekend away or the next journey across Europe, it feels like a natural companion.

In the meantime, we hope this magazine inspires a debate, rekindles a memory and, above all, sends you somewhere new.

Dan Murphy

Dan is a lifelong golfer. He had the great fortune to grow up within 200 yards of the 5th fairway of his local 9-holer, Rawdon, in Leeds.

Dan attended his first Open Championship in 1988 at Royal Lytham. The first action he saw, peering through the crowds behind the 8th green, was Paul Broadhurst holing out from the fairway below for an eagle. Which seemed perfectly normal at the time.

Since then, he has attended a further 27 Opens. Tragically, he can recite a phenomenal number of arcane statistics about The Open – whether you ask him to or not.

Dan has a post-graduate diploma in print journalism and is an experienced writer and editor. He is also a director of NCG’s parent company.

Dan specialises in the golf courses of the British Isles and heads up NCG Top 100s course rankings. He is not unacquainted with links golf and is closing in on a lifetime tally of 700 courses played.

In a former life, Dan was NCG’s equipment editor. Currently in his bag are: Ping G440 Max driver, Ping G440 Thriver, Ping G440 4-wood, Ping iDi 3-iron, Ping Blueprint-S irons, Ping S259 wedges and a Ping Scottsdale Tec Ketsch Onset putter.
